FIFA 99 (EA Sports)
The FIFA series successfully defended its crown in 1998 with one of the most dazzling, entertaining performances by a sports game to date. Proving that perfect is a temporary term, FIFA 99 took FIFA 98 and one-upped it across the board. The controls feel better, the player animations are amazingly crafted, and the already top-notch gameplay is even more impressive.
We appreciate the fact that EA Sports was able to build a game that accurately mimics the beauty of the real-life sport it is imitating. As good as it is, you could play countless games of computer football or basketball and never learn anything about how these sports are really played. Not so with FIFA 99, which will imprint upon even novices the underlying flow of the game as you play.
But maybe we're getting too ethereal. Maybe all this fancy talk is just another way of saying the obvious: As with any game that is as fun to watch as it is to play, FIFA 99 rocks.
