The good: Crisp graphics; new player jukes; all the editing options you could ask for; added Party Games.  
The bad: Same trash talk; new player models look too lanky.  
The bottom line: NFL Blitz 2001 serves up enough punishing arcade-football goods to warrant a look from anyone who likes fast-action gameplay.

Midway is charging hard to the gridiron once again with more fist-in-your-face football action in NFL Blitz 2001. While the gameplay may follow the same formula as the previous smash-mouth titles, Blitz 2001 hits the field with more gameplay extras, all-new player models, and new moves. This is arcade football at its finest.

When it hit the arcade scene three years ago, Blitz was an instant hit with sports-loving gamers and non-sports-loving gamers alike. By combining football atmosphere with the roughhousing shenanigans of the WWF, Midway created a beast that brought carnage-filled pigskin joy to everyone. In terms of features, the franchise has come a long way since its debut, but at Blitz 2001's core remains the same energy and style that made the original Blitz one of the most popular football titles of all time.

Inside Blitz 2001's locker room, you'll find all the NFL franchises, complete with 11 of the best offensive and defensive players on each team (that's 22 players, if you're keeping score). However, you're not limited to just those teams: you can also build your own team using players that exist in the game or with players you've created. And, as in Blitz 2000, you can edit your teams' playbooks and design plays to reflect your style of play. Once you have all the particulars figured out, hit the field and take your squad through the paces in Exhibition, Season, and Tournament modes.

For added variety, you'll also find three new Party Games. In 1st & Goal Frenzy, your challenge is to score a touchdown from a designated spot. As you score each TD, you get moved back 10 yards to attempt the same feat. Score from the 20 yard line and next time you'll have to score from the 30 yard line, and so on. Goal Line Stand challenges you to stop your opponent from scoring and works like 1st & Goal Frenzy in reverse. Each time your opponents score, they move up 10 yards at a time until you can stop them in four downs. QB Challenge, which is actually a good practice arena for honing your passing skills, requires you to use quick reflexes and move your offense downfield, hitting your receivers in a specific pattern. While these side games certainly aren't as engaging as a full-blown contest, they're fun to work in while playing with a group of friends.

Blitz's gameplay has always been slanted toward its two-player game, simply because it's more engaging and because you can count on the human-error factor. If you've played Blitz before, then you know what we're talking about. How many times have you thought you were throwing it to one receiver, only to have the ball fly toward someone else who happened to be blanketed by defenders? As it's been in the past, the AI in the single-player game can be pretty cheap, especially at the higher skill settings, and you can almost always count on a comeback by the computer if you're leading in the fourth quarter.
