Director: T.Babu Mathampatti Shivkumar (a cousin of Sathyaraj) has produced many films with top heroes. So who are we to grudge him if he wants to launch his son Sathyan as a hero? Never mind that Sathyan does not qualify from any angle as a hero, has an ungainly walk and a voice that badly needs to be exercised and controlled. Understandable when the director lingers with shots of the shoes, pants etc of the hero and takes his own time moving up. Also understandable that Kausalya makes no bones about showing her disgust for Sathyan when he squeaks: 'I love you'. And the more he repeats it, the more she is put off. Not that she fares well either. All one can remember of her are her pink eyelids, curled false eyelashes, rolling eyes apparently of someone who is not all there. Did the director really intend his female lead character to be portrayed the way she has been? Karan in a few scenes of flashback as Kausalya's husband tries to pep up the proceedings, but is removed from the scene fast. The newly-wed husband trips on his wife's pallu' and goes for a toss right over the sharp top of a brass lamp. What a way to spend the wedding night! Seasoned performer Sivakumar is locked up in a room most of the time, a liquor bottle rolling into the frame now and then and his hand shown stretching out for it. One suspected he had some disease. But no. He is mourning for his son-in-law and has vowed he will not come out of the room till Kausalya re-marries. But he does come out quite a few times. Debutant director Balu seems to be bogged down by the sheer pressure of delivering the goods, with the odds heavily stacked against him. Malini Mannath
