ag0ny - Konami Man has finished the LPE-Z380 Programmer's Manual. The manual is a very good technical reference for users who want to know how the board is built and how ir works, and for developers who want to get the maximum performance of it.
The LPE-Z380 board
In case you haven't heard of this project: the LPE-Z380 board is a project built by Leonardo Padial, consisting mainly of a Z380 processor running at 14.31Mhz, a SIMM slot, a 1Kb biport memory and an EPROM where the board's BIOS is stored. This board allows to use up to 128Mb of RAM in any MSX computer, and a 32-bit CPU.

LPE-Z380 (Posted by msxorg, 3/Aug/2000, 04:09pm) | Maybe everybody should just stop wining about a new MSX and just buy this card.
This card does what other people promise.
I hope there will be a intergrated standalone version with this processor that you can mount into a pc cabinet. And that the other cards needed (GFX, audio) for a standalone system will be developed. The slotexpander is nice, but how do you build this into a cabinet? Most people I talk to, don't want to invest $300 in a system based on loose prints without any protection/covering.
It's to bad that the maker of the ACE boards and Padial can't get any agree on a system that will be compatible. If there are made 3 new MSX computers (including a possible Japanese one), this will result in little support from the existing MSX community. I mean, wich system should we choose then? This will finally result in a divided MSX userbase, lost sales and development of new software and hardware will be based again on the current MSX specs. |
Slotexpander and divided userbase (Posted by ag0ny, 3/Aug/2000, 05:03pm) | I think the latest Padial slotexpander can be screwed to a PC cabinet, so the Z380 card would fit just as any PC ISA/PCI card, but I'm not sure of this.
About the divided userbase, we're already divided. In Brazil most people are still working on their MSX1 machines (that's why Adriano had to develop an MSX1 version of Uzix), and the ACE001 board is just an MSX2+ with an integrated slot expander. Anyway, the ACE001 board is nowadays the best choice of people who want an MSX2+ and can't find it anywhere else. |
