Readers' Choice - The Ten Best Female Characters

TenSpot
By GameSpot Staff
Designed by James Cheung

Our TenSpot: Best Female Characters received a great number of reader responses, which proves that you truly like the ladies of computer gaming. Five thousand of you voted in our poll or submitted responses through our readers' ballot page, and now we bring you your top ten finalists for the best female characters in PC games.

Before we dive straight in, it's customary for us to talk a bit about the readers' choices, some of which were quite interesting. Your sharp memory and imagination never cease to surprise us ; you remembered the obscure, the unpopular, and the forgotten. And you sometimes chose the outlandish, such as the female commandos in Unreal Tournament. Many of your write-ins were excellent choices, but they simply didn't receive enough votes. However, they definitely deserve to be mentioned.

Some of your favorites were really good characters, indeed. Many European gamers have been able to play Funcom's great adventure game, The Longest Journey, which is published by Empire Interactive in the UK, and they submitted April Ryan, the game's protagonist, as one of the best female characters ever. Some other female characters that you chose as your favorites were Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn's apprentice from Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith; Maureen Corley from Full Throttle; Mercedes "Meche" Colomar from Grim Fandango; and Sophia Hapgood, Indy's sidekick from the Indiana Jones adventure games. Among the most obscure gems was Leela, the ship-operations artificial intelligence from the Marathon games who went rampant at the end of Marathon 2: Durandal. All of these were excellent female characters, and we appreciate them as much as you do.

Now, by popular vote, here are your top ten favorite female characters of all time.
