Hosts of the Channel:
There are currently quite a few ops (or hosts, ops have a @ infront of their Nicknames). Ops have the power to Kick, or even ban, people from the channel. So Evil Ghost Pirates beware.

One other thing, please don`t ask to be given Ops. Ops will be added if we think we need more and we will pick them from Regulars on the Channel. Thanks.

So how do I get on IRC and #monkey-island?

Connecting: Figure 1

An IRC application like mIRC (Highly recommended) or any other IRC program is needed to connect to an IRC server. You can also connect to IRC using JAVA Chat or the Java Chat located at the DALnet homepage.

Assuming you are using mIRC to connect, upon loading mIRC you should see the following window (see Figure 1).

Enter your Name, Email and Nick for use on the channel. Also enter a alternate nick in case your first one is taken. You don`t have to enter your real Name and address... anything will do.

Adding a Server

Connecting: Figure 2 Some servers can be faster than others, if you are on a slow server this can cause you to Lag. Click on 'ADD' and you should see a new window open (See Figure 2).

Enter in a Description for the Server, enter the address for the server and finally the Port number. Best to use port 6667 for most server.

Here are a few of the DALnet servers:

The servers in red are ones I recommend as they usually work well for me.
  • barovia.dal.net
  • viper.dal.net
  • raptor.dal.net
  • farside.dal.net
  • hebron.dal.net
  • irc.dal.net
  • skypoint.dal.net
  • voyager.dal.net
  • glass.dal.net
  • stlouis.dal.net
  • phoenix.dal.net
  • mystic.dal.net
  • nether.dal.net
  • toast.dal.net
  • mindijari.dal.net
  • toronto.dal.net
  • liberator.dal.net
  • kechara.dal.net
  • dreamscape.dal.net
  • taxi.dal.net
  • webbernet.dal.net
  • dragon.dal.net
  • webzone.dal.net

The server's port are usually 6667, or 7000

Select any DALnet server, then connect. There might be problems with connecting to a server, if there is a problem connecting with one server, select another server. After successfully connecting to a DALnet server, if using mIRC, a menu should popup, asking what channel do you like to join.

To join the #monkey-island channel, type in:

/join #monkey-island

Then you should be in the channel.

To change your nick while in a chat, type in:

/nick newnick

If you like your nick, you can register you nick so you are the only one able to use it. To register a nickname type /nickserv register password

Common problems on DALnet:

DALnet has common, sometimes annoying, problems, some of these problems are...

Splits: Splits are when the network of DALnet servers split up. Causing some people on one server to see other groups on the other server quit IRC but in reality the people never quit IRC. All the DALnet servers are suppose to be connected, but sometimes the server lose the connection, so splits occur. The only solution is to switch to a different server where the majority of the people are in. To see a complete list of servers while connected to a server type /links.

Lag: Lag is the time waiting for someone to see another's response. The larger the lag time the longer for someone to see what another person is saying. Usually lags occur when some servers are slower than others. So when one person is on a slower server, and others are on a faster server, the person on the slower server lags. To improve lag time, connect to a better server that is not as lagged. So whenever you think people are ignoring you, it's just due to lag. The only solution is to switch to a better server.

Nick collsion, kill by another user: Nick collision occurs when you logged on DALnet using a nickname another user has registered through Nickserv. The nickname owner can turn KILL on, thus the user using the registered nickname gets 60 seconds to switch to another nickname or Nickserv will disconnect you from the server. Kill by another user is when you are using a registered nickname by someone else, and that someone else likes to have the nickname back. That person kills you by typing in some commands and when you get kill you are disconnected from the server.

Using a nickname registered to someone else: On DALnet there is services like Nickserv and Chanserv. Nickserv is a service which allows DALnet users to register their nickname, so they can own it. If you connect to DALnet using a nickname someone else uses, you will see a messages saying either the nickname is registered by another user OR you have 60 seconds to change nickname or get kill. If you are using a registered nickname, type /nick <new nickname> to change nickname and hope the nickname is not registered too. To register a nickname type /msg nickserv register <password>.

The above instructions should get you on DALnet and #monkey-island and you shouldn`t experience any difficult problems. If you still experience problems getting on DALnet or IRC, E-mail me. I hope to see you at the channel!
