LIRA to start poetry workshop in August

July 23, 2000 | The Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), a group of young poets writing in Filipino, invites budding writers and students interested to hone their craft in Filipino poetry to join this year's new workshop period starting in August up to February next year.

LIRA takes pride in its poetry clinic first organized in 1985 by multi-awarded poet and critic, Virgilio S. Almario, known in the literary circle as Rio Alma, and currently the executive director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

LIRA's workshops have inspired and set the careers of a number of young writers now among the more respected names in Filipino poetry. They include Oragon poets and prolific authors and editors Roberto T. Anonuevo and Romulo P. Baquiran Jr., performance artist and versatile poet Vim Nadera, Centennial prize-winning playwright and lawyer Nick Pichay, poet and journalist Ariel Dim. Orlongan, poet-teacher and publisher Michael Coroza, and now LIRA's new president, poet and children's story writer, Rebecca T. Anonuevo.

LIRA's workshops are an opportunity for listening to and interacting with the country's most notable poets in Filipino, namely, Teo Antonio, Mike Bigornia, Jesus Manuel Santiago, and Fidel Rillo among others.

To qualify for the workshop interested applicants may submit at least five poems (typed double spaced on regular size bond paper), a brief bionote (including contact number, address, and/or email) and 1 x 1 ID picture to LIRA c/o Adarna House, Sct. Limbaga St., Quezon City or email: anoreb@philonline.com or rta9@yahoo.com, or call 641-5067 for inquiries.

Deadline for submission of entries is July 29, 2000. Successful applicants will be notified immediately.
