Station plan for larger casino OK'd

The North Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved Station Casinos' plan to build a larger neighborhood casino than originally planned on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Craig Road.
The original 317,300-square-foot complex will be 49,700 square feet larger to allow for more gaming space. Initially, 10 percent of the floor space was for gaming; now 30 percent of the hotel will have slot machines and table games, casino officials said.
The extra space is needed for the operation to be profitable, said Scott Nielson, executive vice president and general counsel for Station Casinos.
A handful of residents opposed any kind of casino on the 34 acres at Martin Luther King Blvd. and Coralie Avenue, next to the Vons plaza, but others welcomed the project.
Bonnie Kelley, who lives about six miles from the site, opposed the proposal.
"I don't think it should be approved to be this large," she said, adding that the city could stop the project by limiting the gaming.
The complex, which will be named Craig Ranch Station, will have three restaurants; a five-story, 200-room hotel; meeting rooms; and 10 movie theaters.
Councilwoman Shari Buck said casino revenues are generated by gaming, not the amenities a casino provides. With that, she acknowledged the need for 30 percent of the hotel's space to be gaming.
The hotel, which will cost between $130 million and $150 million, is expected to create 1,200 jobs. Nielson said Station Casinos plans to hold job fairs that target North Las Vegans.
A construction start date has not been set, but hotel executives said it will open by the end of 2002.
