Overcast conditions prevailed for the half-hour warm-up with a few spots of rain punctuating proceedings as drivers made their final preparations for the race with the two McLaren-Mercedes setting fastest times.

WEST McLAREN MERCEDES

Technical: Three MP4/16s unchanged in specification from first day.

Sporting: Coulthard and Hakkinen first and second fastest after routine, trouble-free runs. Coulthard delayed briefly at start of session when team suspected engine oil leak although this did not prove to be the case.

Quotes: Ron Dennis: "I think all the top teams are concerned about reliability issues, but we have had no real problems."

 

ORANGE ARROWS ASIATECH

Technical: Thre AMT-engined A21s on hand for Jos Verstappen and Enrique Bernoldi.

Sporting: Verstappen(2nd) was happy with his race set-up. Bernoldi spun into the wall exiting the pit lane on his first lap, sustaining minor nose damage to his A22.

Quotes: Jos Vertstappen: "The car feels reasonably well balanced this morning."

 

BMW WILLIAMSF1 TEAM

Technical: Three FW23s unchanged from Friday free practice.

Sporting: Ralf Schumacher worried by excessive understeer despite a late tyre pressure change. Also had minor engine mapping problem with T-car. Montoya very happy with balance.

Quotes: Gerhard Berger: "We're quite happy but we need a little more downforce."

 

LUCKY STRIKE BAR HONDA

Technical: Three BAR003s on hand for Jacques Villeneuve and Olivier Panis.

Sporting: Villeneuve used both race and spare car, both he and Panis reporting that the balance felt fine.

Quotes: Jacques Villeneuve: "The car is good in race trim and we were running with around 80kg of fuel aboard."

 

SCUDERIA FERRARI MARLBORO

Technical: Three F2001s available for Schumacher and Barrichello.

Sporting: Schumacher had a slight brake problem with the T-car while he and Barrichello also checked out their race cars.

Quotes: Michael Schumacher: "We didn't do too many laps this morning as^we're keeping the cars for the race."

 

RED BULL SAUBER PETRONAS

Technical: Three C20 chassis unchanged from yesterday

Sporting: No problems for either Heidfeld or Raikkonen. Heidfeld reckoned his car was even better than during qualifying.

Quotes: Nick Heidfeld: "I'm delighted about the way the weekend has gone so far and I'm sure we'll be in the points if we finish."

 

JAGUAR RACING

Technical: Three Jaguar R2s available for the team.

Sporting: Irvine quite happy with the feel of the car, Burti unhurt after yesterday's accident and back at the wheel of repaired car.

Quotes: Eddie Irvine: "The car's handling is certainly more benign in race set-up than last year's."

 

BENSON & HEDGES JORDAN HONDA

Technical: Three Jordan EJ-11s unchanged in specification from first day.

Sporting: No problems whatsoever for Frentzen and Trulli, just carrying out full tank runs and race checks.

Quotes: Trevor Foster: "Our race tactics are clear-cut, but we are not discussing them."

 

BRIEFLY

Jean Alesi has a slight brake problem with the spare Prost Acer while Fernando Alonso had a slight off-track moment with the European Minardi F1 close to the end of the session and did not continue. Both Benetton-Renaults suffered from water leaks.
