In Taps, Hutton received his second nomination for a Golden Globe Award.

As a member of New York's Circle Repertory Company, Hutton originated the role of Peter Haskins in the Broadway production of Craig Lucas' Prelude to a Kiss. Starring opposite Henry Fonda, Hutton appeared in the Los Angeles stage production of The Oldest Living Graduate , which was later broadcast live for NBC. At the Circle Repertory Company, he starred in Babylon Gardens with Mary Louise Parker. Hutton also directed Nicole Burdette's Busted for the Naked Angels Theater Company in New York.

On television, Hutton produced and starred in Showtime's Mr. And Mrs. Loving, written and directed by Oscar-nominated Richard Friedenberg, who wrote the screenplay for A River Runs Through It. Also for Showtime, Hutton starred as the title character in Aldredge Ames: Traitor Within. After starring in A&E's Nero Wolfe: The Golden Spiders, Hutton agreed to executive produce, direct and star in a new series of Nero Wolfe films. The series, co-starring Maury Chaykin, premieres in April 2001 on A&E.

Working behind the camera, Hutton has directed a number of music videos including "Drive" by the Cars, "Not Enough Love" by Don Henley, and the Neil Young concert film Freedom. He also directed an episode of Steven Speilberg's Amazing Stories entitled "Grandpa's Ghost," from a story he wrote.

Hutton premiered his feature film directorial debut, Digging to China, to an ecstatic welcome at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. This offbeat coming of age story starred Kevin Bacon, Mary Stuart Masterson, and introduced Evan Rachel Wood. This spring, Hutton will begin working on John Sayles' Gold Coast, co-starring Angela Bassett and Edie Falco.

Hutton currently resides in New York and is the father of a son, Noah.
