Interview with Lee Sheldon
October 23, 2001 by Tom

Quandary has posted an interview with game writer and designer Lee Sheldon, who has worked on such games as The Riddle of Master Lu and Dark Side of the Moon. Here's a clip:

Peter: What's your opinion on the current state of Adventure games?

Lee: I'll be honest. I haven't played many new ones. Most have followed the path of what only a couple of years ago we were calling hybrids (like "Wild Wild West"), and I'm simply not very good at playing action games. The non-hybrids I've seen don't add anything new, or are just out-and-out sequels, not bad games necessarily (I liked "MYST:Exile"), just nothing new in their approach to adventuring. For the genre to reclaim a place at the table, it will simply have to come up with something new. RPGs had a resurgence, as did strategy games. Why not adventures? I've been concentrating on MMORPGs and persistent worlds. "The Gryphon Tapestry," a MMORPG I worked on a couple of years ago, would have been as much an adventure game as an RPG with tons of story-telling. I think that there is a great opportunity for multiplayer adventure games. I also think adventure games would work well on PDAs. I know "Colossal Cave" has been ported to cell phones (as it has been ported every place else!).

Call of Cthulhu Interview
October 22, 2001 by Tom

ToTheGame has posted an interview with Andrew Brazier of Headfirst Productions, talking about their upcoming game, Call of Cthulhu, a first-person action/adventure based on the works of HP Lovecraft. Here's a clip:

I understand there is going to be little music in the game, with lots of work being put into the sound effects - perhaps creating a Hitchcock's 'The Birds'-like atmosphere, which I think is a really good idea. Apart from this, what is being done to re-create the Lovecraftian atmosphere , in my opinion an extremely important part of his stories?

The graphics are vital in creating the right look and feel of the game and we are taking great trouble to make sure that everything in the game is authentic for the time period. Lighting and superfluous details (newspaper articles you may find which relate to things you have done, etc.) also go to help make the game 'feel' right. And of course sound effects and what little music there is will also help set the atmosphere.

"Bad news" concerning Runaway
October 16, 2001 by Tom

Sadly, things don't seem to be working out well for Dinamic Multimedia, makers of Runaway: A Road Adventure. Here's a quote pulled from their site:

Bad news: Because of the financial problems with Dinamic Multimedia, the development of all different versions of Runaway is frozen until everything can be fixed.
Let's hope things that this doesn't become a permenant freeze, as I'm sure there are many gamers that would love to play Runaway in thir native language--myself included.
