Unity Newsletter Issue No 4, October 2001
A newsletter from Dr Peter Wong MLC, NSW Parliament

Background
  • UNITY is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing an Australia that is truly multicultural.
  • UNITY is neither a 'left' nor a 'right' party. It represents reasonable, tolerant and truly Australian values.
  • UNITY is committed to reconciliation and genuine native title.
  • UNITY believes we must urgently salvage our international reputation as an open, inclusive, outward looking country.
  • UNITY represents and works for all Australians, not just some Australians.
It is a party for the future.

Objectives

Unity believes that our ethnic and cultural diversity enriches Australia. It is a matter of great pride to us. We treasure this diversity as part of our national heritage and we will fight to preserve it. We celebrate our multicultural heritage.

The Spirit of the Party

Unity is dedicated to a peaceful and respectful co-existence. The candidates we endorse will reflect our aim of ensuring that Australia continues to be a nation where peoples of every race, culture and religion live in mutual respect and equality.

Why we are not just another Party

Unity draws support from a wide cross-section of the Australian community. Our political system has for too long been dominated by parties that claim to represent us all, while cynically seeking to exploit our differences. Recent events demonstrate all too clearly that we cannot afford to allow this divisive behaviour to continue.

Our name was chosen to recognise that Australia is founded on the efforts of migrants from all over the world. It also acknowledges the debt we owe to our indigenous peoples. Only through Unity will we be able to protect our achievements.

Unity is forming branches throughout Australia. People from all walks of life will be represented. It is a party of city and country dwellers, employers and employees, young and old, rich and poor. It is a party of newly arrived migrants, indigenous people, and those who have lived here for generations.

Unity is inclusive. We have no hidden agenda. We are not a party of envy and hate. Unity is a party for all Australians.
