STATIC TESTING OF CARBON FIBER
FRAMES - Spring 1998

Several carbon fiber frames were tested in the University of Maine Testing Apparatus. The enclosed is a brief summary of these tests. The figure below shows the raw data resulting from tests on 5 different frames. For the most part the trend in the data is linear, with the exception of the TREK frame. Table 1 summarizes the initial stiffness calculated using linear regression analysis. The stiffest frame tested was the AEGIS black weave. Little difference in stiffness was observed when the AEGIS 5-ply, AEGIS Ultra-Light and the KESTREL frames are compared. The TREK frame starts out relatively flexible compared to the others. Its stiffness then gradually increases to the point where, at a load of 100 lbs., its deflection is less than all of the frames except for the black weave
