The Norman Chatterton Coat of Arms from Ireland has a lion and
three stars on
the shield, and the crest, an antelope’s head pierced with an arrow
from the back of
the neck. The Motto is, “Loyal au mort” (Loyal to the dead).
About 1100, the king of England gave the manor and township of
Chadderton to
the Anglo Saxon family of Trafford for services rendered. About 1230,
Sir Richard
De Trafford gave the manor Chadderton and Foxdenton, in the parish
of Oldham,
to his second son Sir Geoffrey De Trafford as an inheritance. Sir Geoffrey
and his
heirs assumed the surname Chatterton after they took possession of
the manor.
In ancient heraldic collections, the Gryffon or Gryphon is drawn
grasping a shield
emblazoned, Azure (blue), a Gryphon segreant (erect), argent (silver),
which may
probably allude to the motto, “Grip Griffin, Hold Fast”; or, as another
writer
suggests, to the fact that the Traffords having held fast their estates,
or at least their
ancestor having done so, at the Norman period.
