About LE Group

LE Group's assets are primarily power stations and networks. To meet market and regulatory requirements, Asset Ownership and Governance is divided into three distinct businesses:

  • LPN (London Power Networks) owns our public networks, which are regulated by Ofgem.
  • EPN (EPN Distribution Limited) owns our regulated public networks in north London and East Anglia.
  • 51° serves fixed and mobile telecoms operators, systems integrators and other organisations with London wholesale bandwidth requirements.
  • LES (London Electricity Services) deals with unregulated private networks.
  • LPC (London Power Company) manages the group's generation assets.

LPN [London Power Networks]
LPN's distribution area covers some 665km2. It is almost entirely urban and serves the most densely populated region in the UK. It supplies over 2 million customers and some of the most sensitive locations in London: from hospitals and financial institutions, to Government offices. Almost the entire network is underground, helping LPN give Londoners the most stable electricity system in the UK.

LPN [London Power Networks]
EPN manages the largest distribution network in the UK:

  • 35,116km of overhead lines
  • 55,168km of underground cables
  • 34,479 pole transformers
  • 28,335 ground mounted transformers

EPN serves 3.2 million end customers through a 90,000 km network in East Anglia and North London.

LPN [London Power Networks]
51° is LE Group's new telecommunications infrastructure business for London. LE Group has constructed an 85km high capacity digital network circling London with spurs reaching into the capital's busiest districts. This 'ring of light' has been laid alongside LE Group's existing electricity distribution network in London and is supported by a portfolio of more than 17,000 secure and managed properties.

51° has been created to serve fixed and mobile telecoms operators, systems integrators and other organisations with London wholesale bandwidth requirements. In addition to 51°'s backbone telecoms network, LE Group's 30,000km of London electricity network offers these potential customers exceptional access opportunities to the local loop.

LES [London Electricity Services]
LES specialises in private electrical networks, which are not subject to regulatory constraints. LES, however, provides customers with standards of supply, service and security, over and above those required for a regulated company.

LES clients include: British Airports Authority (BAA), London City Airport, Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Docklands Light Railway, commercial buildings such as Canary Wharf, and many banks in the City of London.

Trust and transparency are fundamental to the service LES offers. Its philosophy of partnership applies internally too. LES also works with LPC (London Power Company) to provide combined heat and power facilities, which are fully integrated with a client's energy network.

LPC [London Power Company]
LPC was formed in 1989 to hold a number of minority shares in generation. In November 2000 it became formally responsible for managing LE Group's generation assets. The acquisition of Sutton Bridge Power station in April 2000 lifted LE Group to a 1.5% share of the generating market in England and Wales. Acquiring Cottam Power Station, in December 2000, boosted our market share to approximately 4.5%. In December 2001 we increased our market share to 6.4% by buying West Burton Power Station in the East Midlands.

Being able to generate electricity on this scale gives us the ability to hedge our risks in an unpredictable market.
