14 February - The Queen opens the Jamaican Parliament in its 21st anniversary year of independence.

1 March - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh pay a State Visit to the United States, visiting President Reagan on his ranch in California and travelling to Hollywood.

22 March - President Kaunda of Zambia begins a State Visit in the UK.

25 May - The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh travel to Sweden for a State Visit as guests of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

10 November - The Queen travels to Kenya. Engagements include a visit to the site of the Treetops Hotel where she first learned of her Accession in 1952.

24 November - During a visit to Bangladesh and India, The Queen presents the insignia of the Order of Merit to Mother Teresa of Calcutta for her work with the poor of India. During the same visit The Queen meets Indian prime minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, and attends the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in New Delhi.
