Detail : Discovered to be afire offshore and run to the beach, where her passengers and crew disembarked.. The tug DAISY LEE towed her out while she was still burning, with the intention of scuttling her, but was unable to do so. After she burned through her towline she drifted back to shore and burned to the waterline. Her live cargo was pushed overboard while she was still well out, but they all swam safely to shore.
Probably owned by C.S. Hubbard, Chicago
Builder Bates was from Milan, OH, but built her in Canada.
Seized by U.S. for violation of shipping laws in 1852 and became an American bottom.
Rebuilt in 1861, repaired in 1865.

Detail : Collided with wharf and went ashore in a NE gale, where she broke up.
The USLS crew anticipated the disaster and had a beach apparatus set up near where she struck. They fired a line over her and removed the crew of 6 by breeches' buoy. Later a pet dog and a horse were saved from the vessel, before she went to pieces.She had been bound Deseronto, Ont., for Oswego.
Out of Hamilton, Ont.
One source says she was the Oswego-built schooner of 1854.

Detail : Bound Chicago for the new Soo Canal and Lake Superior. Ran into a gale so violent that soon waves were washing right over her decks. One particulaly large one smashed her forward cabin and toppled one of her stacks, causing great danger from fire. Disabled, she tried to put in to Sheboygan, but struck bottom after one of her anchor chains broke. Drove ashore and settled in shallow water, later broken up by wave action.

Detail : Left at anchor in Thunder Bay by steamer HURON CITY. Anchor chains parted and she was driven against Gilchrist dock and wrecked. Crew abandoned her with difficulty. Later removed, but not returned to service.
On Nov 20, 1880, she was cast adrift by steamer JAMES P. DONALDSON, driven ashore and wrecked in a gale, 4 mi E of Erie, PA. Her crew was saved by the Lifesaving Service using breeches' buoy. Captain of the barge and captain of lifesaving crew were old shipmates. She was heavily damaged and declared a total loss in some papers, but was recovered in June of 1881.
Rebuilt in 1876.
Completely dismasted in a gale in 1856.

Sunk by ice near Turtle light, Lake Erie, in December of 1895 after stranding on a bar. Reportedly went down in deep water, but later recovered. Her crew was saved by the tug ROY.

Detail : Battling 30-foot waves and 65 mph winds , she rode up on a huge wave and broke in two, sinking quickly. The German motor vessel Christian Sartori was first on the scene, but was unable to find any of her crew. Extensive air-sea rescue operation by the Coast Guard yielded just two freezing survivors on a raft 14 hours later. She was bound Buffington Harbor, IL, for Calcite, MI, and was the 2nd largest vessel ever lost on the Lakes. Vessel owners and insurance companies claimed for years that she was simply overwhelmed by the storm, and didn’t break in two, but dives in the spring of 1997 confirmed that she had, thereby proving that it was hull failure rather than an act of God which killed her.
Owned by the Bradley Fleet. Her homeport of Rogers City, MI was also the home of 33 of her crew.

Her crew fought the fire until it was apparent that they would not be able to extinguish it, the abandoned her for the SUMNER, which had been standing by. The tug drifted into the shallows at the position shown and burned to the waterline. Her registration document was surrendered at Port Huron 6/30/93, annotated "Burned, total loss."

The fire began in her coal bunker. She was taken in tow after burning out and left to sink near pt. Pelee. Her engine and boiler may have been recovered in 1883.
Rebuilt in 1867 and came to the lakes from New York City; she was only here 5 weeks before her loss.
Sold by U.S. Quartermaster Corps in 1866.

By the ime she reached the harbor, she was unmanageable due to the excessive water in her hold, and ran into the harbor pier, where she later broke up. The USLS saved her crew and much of her rigging, but the vessel was a complete wreck.
Heavy damage in a wreck off Oswego, NY, 1865. Foundered in Straits in November, 1869, abandoned, but salvaged the following August.

Detail : Her boiler exploded violently, blowing off most of her after end, tearing her bottom out and sinking her quickly. Parts of her boiler were found more than 3/4 of a mile from the site of the explosion. A coroner's jury found that the BROOKLYN had been pouring on too much steam in a effort to pass the steamer CUBA, some distance ahead and that the 2nd engineer had let the water run low in the boiler. The BROOKLYN had been boundOgdensburg and Buffalo for Chicago. Locally contracted wreckers had to race theives to the wreck to strip it. Her engine was reportedly blown clear out of her hull. Salvagers said her after end was the most thoroughly blasted wredk they'd ever seen.

Ten days later the steamer WELLINGTON encountered the BROOKS lying in 50 feet of water with her stern on the bottom and 8 feet of her bow emergent. When the steamer TRAVELLER attempted to tow her into port, she sank. One report says her safe contained $1 million. Owned by Northern Transportation Co.
She was partially raised, some of her cargo recovered, and dragged submerged to Garden Island, Ont., in Jul, 1857.
Partial explosion of her boiler off Ashtabula in July of 1855, with the loss of one man to scalding, and two - who became frightened and jumped overboard - to drowning. Also sunk in May of the same year on the Canadian shore.

Only vessel ever built at Corunna, she was supposedly designed as a steamer, but her engine was never installed. Her owner John Bully had the scow-steamer ALLEN BULLY built at Saginaw in '77 for the expressed purpose of salving her, but fled the U.S. without paying for the boat before he could.

Lay on the bottom in the Detroit River for some time after burning Apr 17, 1894. She was raised under order of the Canadian Government, the vessel being awarded to the Canadian wrecker.

Extensively rebuilt at F.W. Wheeler, W. Bay City, in 1879.
In spring of 1875 she pulled a tow containing almost 10,000 t. stone up the Detroit & St. Clair R to the Sand Beach harbor of refuge project. It
was considered at the time to be the heaviest tow ever brought up the river.
Sprang a leak due to ice damage and sank in Pelee Passage in late November, 1872. The following spring she came out rebuilt as a steambarge.
