|Story:||Ok, me and my friends currently went out to Pere Cheney, this being June 7-8 2002, we got to the cemetery and were sitting in our car when kids from Grayling came there for a party. We talked for awhile but we decided to go check out the ruins of the town some 2 miles away. When we got there we all had flashlights, one had a video camera. We slowly started to walk towards the supposed caretakers cabin. We stood there standing, pitch black, pure quiet. Me and one of my friends heard a sudden gasp about 5 or 10 feet away from us. We were freaked. We decided to go closer to the cabin. We were videotaping it when we heard a stick about 10 feet past the fence snap. One of my friends told us to back away slowly. We started to move backwards when we all heard feet moving in the woods, first a jog, then a sprint. We all went back to our car in a dead sprint, our car being parked about 50 yards away. We decided to go back to the cemetery then. When we got there I saw a flash of white but thought nothing of it. We were walking around and stuff looking for something. We found the huge oak tree where they say someone hanged themself. One of my friends felt a sudden tap on the head, he was standing directly underneath the tree. Again, this whole time we were in the cemetery, we heard gasps in the distance. One of my friends even felt a gasp on the side of his face and the side of his face got warm. By then we were on our way back to the car. We got back to West Branch where we are from, and decided to watch the movie. When we were at that cabin and were zoomed in on it, there is a face on the other side of it, once the light hits it it moves left then jerks back to the right and out of the camera. A couple moments later we heard the stick snap and the feet shuffle towards us. The face was a pale grayish color. On the camera the whole time we heard gasps at the town and cemetery. I know there are skeptics out there but this is an honest story, we have the face on camera. We won't ever go back there again.|
|Story:||First, it's interesting that I came upon this page by accident. Interesting because I have now lived in florida for about 6 or 7 years. Before then I lived in Grayling for almost 25 years. I grew up there and have visited Pere Cheney cemetery and the site of where the old town once stood a hundred years ago. The number of trips I took there are too many to count, several of which were overnight campouts.
I haven't though about Pere Cheney much since I moved to Florida except every once in a while when talk of haunted places popped up in conversation. A nice fresh reminder this is.
I have done much research into the history of Pere Cheney and consider myself an armchair expert on the subject, but not from a historical point of view. While I have studied what documents I could that were available they were certainly far and few that an accurate account of what happened to the town and it's folk is near impossible to discern.
Much of my information came from the nice old ladies and gentlemen who were alive during or were born shortly after the death of the town. An important aspect as the rumors and stories were still fresh in the hearts and minds of the people in the area. And since much physical information is either unavailable or destroyed, I though they would be the next best source.
Anyway, from what I gathered about Pere Cheney is that there is a significant amount of evidence that would make the place succeptible for being haunted. Hell, for even being a down right bastion of evil. There was an incredible amount of pain and suffering that went on there. An incredible amount.
Now I've heard stories about voices and ghosts and electrical problems with cars. I've heard about hidden houses, ghostly trains, strange lights, and tombstones that come and go as they please. I even remember when a friend of mines mothere, who worked for the Crawford County Sherrif's Department was involved in the arrest of a supposed satanic cult that practiced their rituals there.
Do I believe the place is haunted? No. At least not by ghosts. I haven't seen any, or heard any. And I never had any car trouble there except for trying to drive through a deep puddle and drowning my engine, but that's stupidity on my behalf, not a ghost.
But, I will admit, there is an unmistakeble feeling of dread that surrounds the area. Anyone and everyone I know whos has been there could sense it. And strangely enough, though I may be mistaken, I haven't ever seen an animal within the boundries of the cemetery. No birds, no squirrels, nothing. But like I said, I just may not have been paying attention enough to notice that.
In any case, I do have one strange story to tell surrounding the cemetery itself, not the area of land that housed the town.
A friend and I decided to take a late night jaunt to the cemetery so he could read the headstones. He'd been there before, but has never stayed long to give it a good perusal. After walking around for a few hours, we decided to head home as it was getting quite late. On our way out we noticed that the top part of a headstonewas broken off, laying on the ground next to it's base. Disgusted by the vandalism (and we all should be disgusted by grave vandals) we thought we'd see if we could reseat the stone in it's proper place.
After 2 or 3 attempts to move the stone (an me straining my back trying) we gave up because it was too heavy. We left and went into Grayling for a bite to eat. After relaxing a bit, just before dawn, we thought we'd go back to the cemetery. Now we aren't sure about how long we were gone, but we are sure that it was less than 2 hours.
When we got there were were both shocked at what we saw. The stone that we tried to replace was back up in its spot, right where it belonged. We looked, but didn't find any tracks of any kind that would suggest someone else had been there, but we don't know.
At the time we were unaware of of any caretaker to the cemetery that would be there, especially at about 5:30 in the morning. A truly bewildering, yet somewhat uplifting, experience.
Either way, that's the most interesting story I have about Perey Cheney from personal experience. But there are many others I have heard about its history and its ghosts. Though I wish I knew which secrets about the place are true or not, Pere Cheney has its secrets.
For good or ill there is something about it. A feeling, a dread, or negative energy if you will. It is a sad place, full of pain and agony. A place that deserves respect and compassion whether you believe in ghosts or not. I, personally don't believe in them. But I do believe strong emotion can leave several impressions on the living world. This place certainly has many such impressions.
|Story:||I grew up in Grayling and graduated from GHS. I went to P.C. probably a dozen times while living there, the last time during a summer break some friends and I had. I'd told all my friends about this old town that had perished due to disease back around the turn of the century, how it was supposed to be a haunted area, etc. We're all pretty into supernatural things and I really just wanted to give them the screaming meemies.
We all headed up there in two different trucks, both fairly new, no electrical problems, etc. We had cell phones, rechargers, walkie talkies, the whole nine yards..my friends were just that convinced that we would need them. I, of course, knew better.
We got there about 6pm, which I told my friends was the real "Witching hour". We set up 'camp' around the trucks, talking, laughing, telling ghost stories. About twenty minutes into this one of my friends decided she had to go to the bathroom. I told her to hold it, we'd drive back into town, but she couldn't. I advised her to stay within 10-15 feet of the car because of the wild dogs that are sometimes in the area. A few minutes after she left our sights, we heard a soft sigh and felt just the slightest breeze across us. Not like a wind, just..as if someone had taken a book and fanned you. It gave us the willies but we figured it was a breeze and her sighing..just like it felt. Then she came tearing around the back of the trucks, bitching at us for playing pranks on her. We ? what she meant, and she told us that while she'd been doing her business, she'd had little pebbles thrown at her, from the backside (she was facing us the whole time). She figured we'd circled around her. We tried telling her otherwise, but she just got pissed and sat in the truck.
Finally, after about an hour of 'nothing', my friends started harassing me, joking, etc. that this was a dead end. They said they were going to look at some of the tombstones (which are barely visible anymore, unfortunately). I advised them to stay well clear, just look from a distance, so as not to disturb anything. About that time the truck turned on and, after pulling my skin back on, I turned around to yell at the friend in the truck for playing a trick on us. She was wide eyed, tears streaming down her face, and her mouth just opening and shutting. I don't think she could have moved had you shoved her out the truck. I yelled to everyone else to hustle it back, and as they were all turning around, laughing, two of them were pelted with stones, again from the back. Now, if you've been there, it's kind of scraggly, with bushes and jack pines all around. Some of it is all sand, some is soil, but not much. There are some places for someone to hide and play a prank but you'd have seen it. Which, we didn't. Doesn't mean someone wasn't playing a prank, but it IS a spooky place.
I haven't gone since, even though I get to Grayling about twice a month to visit. I'd love to go back but a) not by myself, b) not at night and c) not with any of the damn goofballs I went with the first time. You've just got to be serious about being there..almost respectful. It's just a small plot of land with some history to it, but you've got to realize that a lot of people suffered and died in that area and, whether they still live there or not, you have to mind yourself.
Anyway, I had other experiences there, some just plain weird, but it's not anyplace I've ever felt deserved a bad rap. And, there is no witche's grave..plain and simple. So, if you go, be respectful, don't demolish and for God's sake, don't steal anything. If the ghosts don't get you..karma will.

|Story:||Finally, some more info on Pere Cheney. I had looked for a while for info, and not found much.
Finally, we visited my sister-in-law near Higgins Lake, and went off looking for the cemetary. We did here about the witch stories and childerens grave tales.
Well, it is NOT the easiest place to find, let me tell ya. Especially at night, unless you really know your way around.
We finally found, and yes, our minivan did stall once, but only because if had just rained like a M/Fer earlier in the day and the trails were basically flooded. Let's just say, with all that sand and water, I had too replace the brakes and and fix the calipers when we got home.
When we got to the cemetary, it was getting late, but still had a little daylight left. You can tell the place is old. And you can tell that the area was abused by idiots, with all teh trash and stuff all over, but only outside the cemetary.
We all went in and walked around, hitting everystone and corner of the place. I got an almost nostalgic feeling. Yeah, i know, kinda wierd. Some of the others were alittle freaked out.
Good thing though, I got like three full rolls of film out of it. I still need to develop some (no, I don't have a digital yet!), but what I do have I'll post this weekend at
There is also a little other info on that site.
We still are planning on going back, when its alot dryer out.
|Story:||Love your site. Thanks!

|Story:||I LIVE AND HAVE LIVED IN HIGGINS LAKE (ABOUT 15-20 MINUTE DRIVE FROM PERE CHENEY)FOR ABOUT 17 YEARS AND I HAVE VISITED THE CEMETARY ABOUT 5-6 TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THE 17 YEARS I'VE LIVED HERE. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE I HAVE HEARD MANY STORIES OF THE CEMETARY LIKE THE BABIES GRAVE (WHERE PEOPLE SAY IF YOU KNEEL DOWN BY THE GRAVE YOU CAN HEAR A BABY CRY), THE "WITCHES" GRAVE (WHERE PEOPLE SAY IF YOU DISRUPT THE GRAVE SHELL FOLLOW YOU HOME AND HAUNT YOU AND CAST A SPELL ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY), AND THE AUTOMOBILES AND ELECTRICAL DEVICES MALFUNCTIONING, ACTUALLY I COULD PROBABLY SIT HERE AND TYPE FOR DAYS ON THE STORIES I'VE HEARD BUT I DONT WANT TO. ANYWAY, ALL OF MY VISITS TO THE CEMETARY HAVE BEEN AFTER DARK, BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 10:00P.M. AND 5:00 A.M.I HAVE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE ME AFRAID TO GO AGAIN. I HAVE HOWEVER BEEN IN A CAR THAT HAD PROBLEMS, WHEN WE GOT RIGHT AROUND SEEING DISTANCE OF THE CEMETARY THE CAR SPUTTERED BUT STAYED RUNNING. HOWEVER WHEN WE GOT UP BY THE GATE THE CAR STAULED. IT WASNT SERIOUS THOUGH, IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP. WE STILL HUNG OUT THERE FOR A WHILE, WITH NO PROBLEMS. ANOTHER TIME I WENT TO PERE CHENEY WITH ABOUT EIGHT FRIENDS BECAUSE WE HEARD THERE WAS A PARTY OUT THERE, WE GOT THERE AND NO ONE WAS THERE, WE WAITED FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR THEN WENT TO A PARTY SPOT ABOUT 5 MILES FROM ST. HELEN TO SEE IF ANYONE WAS THERE. AGAIN WE WAITED FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR AND DECIDED TO LEAVE, ON THE WAY BACK TO TOWN THE CAR ME AND 2 OF MY FRIENDS WERE IN STARTED ACTING UP REALLY BAD. WE GOT INTO TOWN AND THE CAR (WHICH HAD NO PRIOR PROBLEMS BEFORE) COMPLETELY DIED IN FRONT OF THE FORWARDS GAS STATION IN ST. HELEN. THE NEXT DAY MY FRIEND FOUND OUT THAT THE CAR COULDNT BE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE MECHANIC HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. MY FRIEND SOLD THE CAR FOR $100.00 AND THE GUY WHO BOUGHT IT BEGAN DRIVING THE CAR THE SAME DAY WITHOUT HAVING ANY PROBLEMS OR PUTTING ANY MONEY INTO IT. SO IF YOU WANT TO BELIEVE ALL THE STORIES ABOUT PERE CHENEY THEN YOU CAN RELATE THE CAR PROBLEMS WE FACED THAT NIGHT TO THE "HAUNTED" CEMETARY.|
|Story:||Recent story (12/14/2001) from the Crawford County Avalanche:
Following guilty pleas on the lesser charge of malicious destruction of property over $200, two teens were sentenced last week for their part in attempting to unearth a gravesite in Beaver Creek's historic Pere Cheney Cemetery in May.
Joshua James Strother, of Higgins Lake, and Paul Michael Saylor, of Roscommon, both now 18 years old, were originally charged with disinterment/mutilation of a grave and faced up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 for the crime.
On May 4, turkey hunters in the area of the cemetery, located in southern Crawford County, spotted the teens digging there and reported the sighting to 911 Central Dispatch. The pair, along with an unnamed 16-year old juvenile, had managed to dig three to four feet down into the grave before they were spotted, but no skeletal remains of the grave dated 1919 were disturbed.
Deputies were able to track down the suspects with the help of the hunters who gave a detailed description of their vehicle. The suspects also left footprints, shovels and other evidence at the gravesite.
Upon questioning last spring, the pair told Crawford County Sheriff's deputies they were trying to find rings and other jewelry, but their story later changed during negotiations with Crawford County Prosecutor John Huss when it was revealed the suspects had heard there was a witch in the grave and they were attempting to dig her out.
Strother and Saylor appeared earlier this month in 46th Circuit Trial Court and were sentenced to 90 days in jail, ordered to pay $700 in fines and court costs, and perform 80 hours of community service.
|Story:||I grew up in Crawford County and have been to Pere Cheney
several times. I used to walk the railroad tracks from
near my house to spend hours poking around the old town
site ruins. In the late 60's, before much of the vandalism
occurred, some of the headstones in the cemetery had
pictures of the occupants set in the headstone under small
glass viewing windows. I brought my wife there last year
and was saddened by the scale of destruction caused by
vandals. Most of the headstones are smashed and the
pictures are long gone.
|Story:||terry that sounds more like aliens then ghosts... did you
experiance any missing time? LOL
|Story:||When i read these stories, i was sceptical. I never
believed in ghosts or any other phenomenon, but when i went
camping to higgins lake, my wife asked me to drive to pere
cheney. I couldnt find the cemetary on any map, so i had
to ask around. It seems high school kids would go there to
party and hang out and smash all the monuments and use the
remains for the bonfires they hold nightly, which is sad,
but anyway, we got the directions from clerks at a Marathon
gas station right off 4 mile road. We started out for pere
cheney, and I tell you, I was starting to get a rush as we
neared the road they told me it was on. They told me that
people claim to have car trouble, and problems with
electrical devices such as phones and radios. I just shook
it off as drunk kids driving crappy cars, not being able to
tell if there cars were staring or not. I had a brand new
F-150 so i wasnt worried about Well, we came to the
railroad, and my heart was really beating hard. Mainly for
anxiety, but i'd be lying if I said I wasnt a little
scared. The area is very secluded. I would never go
alone. But we went exactly the way they told us, but found
nothing. We drove back to the gas station, and they told
me how to get there again. We drove back to the cemetary,
still nothing, but on our way back, as I turned on staley
lake road, a cold chill ran from the back seat of my truck
up to the front, felt by both me and my wife. we didnt have
any windows down, and the AC wasnt on. It really freaked
us out. I drove to the gas station, told the lady where we
went and she said we drove right past it. I was pissed
cause i really wanted to see it, but it's a long drive from
the gas station to the cemetary, so i wasnt about to make a
third trip, besides that cold draft was a little to wierd
for me and we had to head back home which is 200 miles
away. (we were on vacation). I went back to the car, got
in, put my keys in the ignition, then, I SWEAR TO GOD!!!!,
my car wouldnt start!!! Click, CLick, that's all. I tried
to jump it, nothing. This was at 10 pm wednesday July 12,
2001. 3 hours later, after hitting my starter with a
hammer, changing and cleaning all my connections, i
realized it just wasnt going to happen. Lucky there was a
motel right next door, i rented a room, and had a tow truck
take my truck to a ford dealer. I had to wait til the
morning to see what was wrong. I had a brand new truck,
never had any problems with it, and now it wont start. The
dealership opened at 8am, i woke up called them and they
called me back with some very disturbing news. my starting
cable was chewed threw. and on each side of the bite marks
were two very small dusty markings, which they say looked
like hands!!!!!!! I seriously think something is very
wrong with that cemetary. I think the spirits are pissed
people have destroyed thier resting place and they're
getting defensive. I'd advise everyone to stay away, I
didnt even see the cemetary, and this happened to me, i got
lucky and they just stopped my car from working. Someone
else may not be as lucky.
|Story:||I visitied Pere Cheney a couple of days ago with my wife and a couple of friends. We went to get photos of orbs, if there were any, and what we got was so much more. We chose not to enter the cemetary but rather take some photos from outside the gate, so not to disturb or show disrespect to any grave sites.
My wife and her two friends got out of the car and walked up to the gate to snap a few pictures. While they were standing there getting ready to take a picture, there was a really thick, stale, cold air that came over them. The night was clear and there was no breeze. Just as this feeling came over them she shot the picture from our digital camera that displays the pic for a brief second after snapping it. They say nothing in the flash in front of them but as the camera displayed a mist that had some really freeky shape to it and freeked them out bad enough to get back in the car. I have the photo and there is definatly something in it. I will get these and other photos up on the web for your viewing soon. I will post here when I get my site up with the photos. This picture you have got to see!

|Story:||yo. i have been to the grave yar several times. my friends and i go two tracking out around there. i have no scary story about it but i know people that have. recently we went out there about 1200 am and a few of my friends hopped out to check things out. they had never been there. i stayed in the truck because that place freaks me out. any ways my friends made it to the gate where they found a bag filled with messages of really weird thngs. it also had bottles of potion and whatnot. they then continued out in the yard and their flashlights died almost completely and at the same time. the truck started fine and normal but we had to listen to my friends tell of voices they heard and how very scared they were. also there is a large tree in the back, an oak i think, that they used to hang people from.|
|Story:||Hi everyone im David i am the one from Chris's story off the cematary and i can vouch for it cause geez im the one that threw the stick and i was also one of the quickest to run away cause i was scared but basicaly i just wanted to say hi and that his story is true...... We will be there again maybe sometime but not any time soon its to scary|
|Story:||Just this last saturday, some friends of mine drove out to the cemetary. It was a spure of the moment thing, and i was the only one who knew how to get there. we got there, went inside and were walking around. I was telling stories about the cemetary, specifiacaly about how my sister got stranded out there when she was in high school (16 years ago) when one of the girls screamed. We all looked over to where she was pointing. There was a shape towards one of the corners of the cemetary that slightly resembled a person. My friend dave picked up a stick and threw it to prove there was nothing there. A second later, we all heard "Who the f*** threw the stick!" and the shape started chasing us. We all flew back to our cars. luckily, they started right up. Sunday morning, i noticed dusty handprints on the back of my car. We are planning on going back out there in a couple of weeks with more people. And just in case, jumper cables and cell phones. If anyone is interested in being taken to the cemetary, write an e-mail to me and I'll see what i can do. I live in roscommon, about 20 minutes away.|
|Story:||I am planning to visit Pere Cheney soon this summer. I
have a place up there about a half hour away. If anyone is
interested in venturing out there, or if anyone is from
around the area interested, send an email.
|Story:||I lived about a half hour away from pere cheney in houghton
lake and i do not reccomend visiting this cemetary alone.
my friends and i went there one night around 1:30am it was
the most frieghtning experience i have ever had in my
entire life. we were sitting in the cemetary inside my
vehicle with the windows down when off in the distance we
heard what sounded like people talking. upon investagation
we found no signs of people but still heard the same noises
but were now by my vehicle we immediatly retuned to my car
and scared to our wits end with the intense feeling of some
kind of presence decided it was time for us to leave. when
attempting to start my car it seemed my battery was dead
and we were about 1 mile in the woods were the nearest town
was about 9 miles away it is called roscommon we left the
cemetary on foot walking to a gas station open 24 hrs off
of higgins lake rd were i contacted someone to give us a
ride to my vehicle and also a jump start when we returned
it was about 5:00am and when i got in my car before
attempting to jump it i turned the key and it started
