The Two-Year College English
Association of the
National Council of Teachers of English
National
TYCA unites teachers of English committed to the teaching and study of
English in the two-year college to advance the profession and provide a national
voice for the two-year college in postsecondary education. Recognizing the
unique institutional character of the two-year college, open to all students,
TYCA is further committed to student diversity in culture, age, background,
ability and goals, and the critical role of literacy required in a democratic
society.
Ben Wiley, St. Petersburg College, Florida, is the recipient
of the 2002 Nell Ann Pickett Service Award. The award is
granted each year to an outstanding teacher whose vision and voice have had a
major impact on two-year college professionalism and whose teaching exemplifies
such outstanding personal qualities as creativeness, sensitivity, and
leadership.
The
first annual TYCA Outstanding Programs in English
Awardswere presented
at the CCCC Convention in Chicago in March, 2002. Northeast Iowa Community
College, Peosta, IA, Montgomery College, Rockville, MD, Umpqua Community
College, Roseburg, OR, and Westchester Community College for Verizon, Valhalla,
NY were recognized for their outstanding programs in English. Montgomery
College, Rockville, MD, Fullerton College, Fullerton, CA, and Chaffey College,
Rancho Cucamonga, CA received honorable mention recognition. For more information on the

Derek Soles was awarded the 2001 TETYC Best Article of the Year Award
for his article "Grading
as a Teaching Strategy" in the December 2001 issue of TETYC.
FAME-- Willard Scott of the NBC Today Show On April 12, 2001 Scott saluted the 100th anniversary of the community college.
SHAME--March 7, 2002 episode of ER
Nurse Abby and four doctors were having a personal conversation, and she said
she attended Penn State. One doctor replied, "Really?!" Abby retorted,
"Did you think I went to a community college because I'm a nurse?"
