NEW PRODIGY SINGLE PLANNED FOR THIS SUMMER

We've all realised by now that it's probably going to take another while until the 4th Prodigy album is going to be released. However, ProCON can now reveal that there are plans for The Prodigy to release a new single this summer! Prodigy's manager Mike Champion told Neko of the ProCON team that The Prodigy are probably going to release the new single 'No Souvenirs' around July - September this year. 'No Souvenirs' is the collaboration between Liam Howlett and Rob Del Naja aka 3D from Massive Attack. The track was written in 1999 and first supposed to be released on the soundtrack for 'The Beach' in February 2000. It then got cancelled from the soundtrack and remained somewhat of a mystery ever since.

Rob Del Naja aka 3D said last year about 'No Souvenirs': "Liam and I had been talking about doing something together for about a year and then we did a track each for a p*rn film called 'The Uranus Experiment'. Liam knew Alex Garland who wrote 'The Beach' and Liam suggested that he did the music and I wrote some lyrics for a song to go on the film's soundtrack. The track is called 'No Souvenirs' and is slightly Pink Floyd; slightly Beach Boys in places; full-on dark but very musical with some great arrangements. But in the end, we felt it wasn't appropriate for the soundtrack album. The rest of the album was too dance and pop-orientated so we pulled it. It might end up as a track on the next Prodigy album." (this quote used to be on the official Massive Attack web site last year)

Not more is known yet about the single, but as it seems the next few months will be interesting!

NME'S CONTROVERSIAL PRODIGY ARTICLE

British Music magazine NME have a rather critical article in their current issue, questioning The Prodigy's future:

"Has Prodigy's fire gone out? - New LP not expected until 2002.
Prodigy have denied rumors of a split after NME discovered the band's long-awaited album will not be released until at least 2002.
Asked whether the band's return is in doubt, a spokeswoman said: "The Prodigy have not split up, Liam Howlett is definitely keeping busy."
But despite a four-year gap since the last album, 'The Fat Of The Land', there is no sign of a new record. Howlett revealed in October 1999 that 'No Souvenirs', recorded with 3D of Massive Attack, was the first completed track for the album. Though the album has a provisional title - 'Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned' - there has been no confirmation of completed tracks since then.
Producer Dan The Automator confirmed last year that he had been working with Howlett. "I think they're only halfway done," he said.
Since the Prodigy's last world tour, fans have questioned whether the band have lost their edge. Howlett's DJ slot at Madonna's Brixton Academy gig last year provoked a furious reaction on Internet message boards saying he had 'sold out'.
In addition, Maxim released a flop solo album, Howlett released a poor-selling DJ mix album and Leeroy Thornhill quit the band.
Meanwhile, frontman Keith Flint is now prim tabloid fodder, thanks to his former relationship with TV presenter Gail Porter.
The Prodigy spokeswoman told NME that there has been no falling out between band members. Just two weeks ago, they were all together at the launch of Thornhills Flightcrank album. But still there's no sign of a new record.
When asked about when the new record would appear, Maxim said recently: "I understand the urgency, believe me I would love it to be out now too. But good music takes time."

UNCREDITED TRACKS ON DIRTCHAMBER

What many people are not aware of is that the tracklist on Liam Howlett's DJ mix album 'The Dirtchamber Sessions Volume 1' isn't actually complete and even contains at least one error. Nekosite on www.nekosite.co.uk is now trying to collect as many of those uncredited tracks as possible. So check out the site and if you spot something then please let me know. Great thanks go to John Roche who has spotted most of the uncredited tracks listed so far.

The error on the tracklist is on track 1 of the album where the track 'Tonto's release' by Rasmus is actually 'Punk Shock' by Rasmus from his LP 'Mass Hysteria'. This error most probably happened because there is 3 interludes on the album which on the tracklist of the album aren't counted as tracks. Therefore there are only 12 tracks listed on the tracklist but when you play the album there really are 15 tracks.

On track 2 there are drum samples from Scholly D`s P.S.K. 'What does it mean' and Run DMC`s 'Sucker MC`s' (playing over How High). At the end of track 3 there's a break (just before DJ Mink) which is from Dynamic Corvette`s "Funky Music is the Thing". This break can also be found on Double Dee and Steinski`s Lesson 3.
The unidentified sample after Dynamic Corvettes track 'Funky music is the thing' is a break from a song called 'Sing, Sing' by Gaz, both of which can be found on Ultimate Breaks and Beats Vol4. The scratches which can be heard during Best Part (of breaking up) are taken from 'Peter Piper' by Run DMC. Also there`s a snippet from Apache between 'the Best part of breaking up' and 'King Kut'. After those 2 breaks and just befor DJ Minks 'Hey, Hey Can u Relate' there`s a tiny trumpet like sample which is from 'I like Funky Music' by Uncle Louie (can be found on Ultimate Breaks and Beats Vol6.)
(all spotted by John Roche)

'the ant' has also spotted a sample of Afrika Bambaata's 'Renegades Of Funk', which is the track Rage Against The Machine have recently covered and released as a single. Listen to the original and you will hear it yourself!

  • Check out Kimmo Karonen's web site on http://www.geocities.com/mindblow_/index.html for a rare sound file of a track performed by Rage Against The Machine together with Keith Flint. It is from the Fuji Festival in Japan 27.07.1997 where Keith Flint made an appearance at Rage Against The Machine's set and did an encore with the band.

  • MTV UK report that apparently Leeroy Thornhill is dating Meg Matthews, the ex-wife of Noel Gallagher from Oasis. (Strangely the 'prodigy' link below the article links to a page about the Rapper Prodigy, just before you get all confused...)

"Meg's Little Prodigy. According to tabloid reports, Meg Matthews (ex-wife of Noel Gallagher) is dating Leeroy Thornhill, the former Prodigy star. They have been good friends for quite a while, and have now apparently been out on a actual date for the first time, this week. An 'inside source' told a tabloid rag, " They went out as a couple for the first time and got on really well but it's early days. It's no secret Meg fancies Leeroy and she's delighted at how things are going." Will Meg be Leeroy's 'wonderwall'? Or will he soon be 'looking back in anger'? Watch this space..."

  • Maria Ekstroem sent us an article on the same subject from http://www.megastar.co.uk/site/today/features/
showbiz_news/20010317z_meg.html which also reveals that apparently Leeroy used to date Kate Moss last autumn.
"MEG MATHEWS is dating best pal Kate Moss' ex-boyfriend.
Meg and former Prodigy star Leeroy Thornhill enjoyed a cosy night at a trendy London bar on Thursday.
Noel Gallagher's former wife and Leeroy have been friends for three years and often went out as a group when Leeroy dated Kate. But pals insist they only got together after Kate and Leeroy split in November.
A source close to the couple said: "It's no secret Meg fancies Leeroy and she's delighted at how things are going.
"They went out for a drink as a couple for the first time on Thursday and got on really well, but it's early days.
"They had a brilliant night - they went to a few bars and left together in the early hours."

  • Leeroy's solo album was released last week - watch out for a 'Flightcrank Special' by ProCON to follow!
