B.C. Sanyal dead
New Delhi
Jan. 9.
The doyen of Indian art, B.C. Sanyal, died here today after a brief illness, family sources said. He was 101.
Born in 1902 in Dhubri in Assam, he carved a niche for himself in Lahore where he set up the Lahore College of Arts.
Affectionately know as ``Bhabeshda,'' he was one of the few artists who witnessed 20th century Indian art in all its phases.
Honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1987, the grand-dad of Indian art was also given honorary citizenship of Baltimore, USA, in 1989.
The theme of the painter-sculptor's art works focused on human struggles, especially by the economically deprived sections of society. PTI
