Faith Seeking Understanding
2000 SUNSTONE SYMPOSIUM
2 - 5 AUGUST

SALT LAKE MARRIOTT HOTEL

FAITH SEEKING UNDERSTANDING
As Mormonism enters the millennium with confidence and optimism, join with questing Saints and scholars to celebrate and ponder the simple and the complex, the human and the divine, the past, present, and future of the remarkable Restoration.

PROPOSALS
Sunstone seeks to celebrate and explore Mormon experience, scholarship, issues, and art through diverse approaches and from many perspectives. Proposals should include session title, 100-word abstract, presenters names and vitas, as well as a detailed summary on the topic's relevance and importance to Mormon studies

From scholarly paper to artistic expression, we strive for excellence in thought and quality in presentation. Proposals will accepted according to standards of excellence in scholarship, thought, and expression. All topics, persons, and beliefs must be treated with respect, regard, and intelligent discourse, and proposals with a belittling tone will be rejected.

TOPICS AND BALANCE
Sessions may feature any subject relating to Mormonism, general religion, or ethical living. The more contested the topic, the more that differing views must be included within the same session.

FORMATS
Sessions may be scholarly papers, panel discussions, interviews, personal essays, sermons, dramatic performances, literary readings, debates, comic routines, art displays, or music presentations.

STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS
Limited travel funds are available for needy college students whose proposals are accepted. Inquire at the Sunstone office.

ORGANIZATION-SPONSORED SESSIONS
Organizations are invited to staff promotional displays and host adjunct sessions, which are advertised in the program. Past symposium sessions have been organized by the Association for Mormon Letters, the B. H. Roberts Society, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Exponent II, Family Fellowship, Mormon Alliance, Mormon History Association, Mormon Peace Gathering, Mormon Studies Association, Mormon Studies Seminar, Mormon Women's Forum, and the Student Review.

ART EXHIBIT AND AUCTION
Mormon art will be exhibited and sold at affordable prices; the profits benefit the Perpetual Sunstone Fund. Donated works are needed. Bring your friends to enjoy and acquire this fine art.

VOLUNTEERS
We need office help before the symposium. At it, we need help staffing registration and bookroom tables and taking tickets at each session. Volunteer hours may be redeemed for free symposium tickets, cassette recordings, back issues, or lengthened subscriptions.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAM MAILING LIST. Sign you and your friends up to be mailed the complete preliminary program in late June. (Email postal addresses to SunstoneUT@aol.com; ask for multiple copies to share.)

MARRIOTT HOTEL REGISTRATION
Sunstone has guaranteed a certain number of sleeping rooms. If you're renting a room, please stay at the Marriott. Rooms with one double-bed are $145; two double-beds are $155. For reservations, call 1-800/228-9290. (Make sure you ask for the downtown Marriott and are on Sunstone's group list.)

SYMPOSIUM PURPOSE
This symposium is dedicated to the idea that the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ are better understood and, as a consequence, better lived when they are freely and frankly explored within the society of the Saints.

We recognize that the search for things that are, have been, and are to be is a sifting process in which much chaff will have to be inspected and threshed before wheat can be harvested.

In sponsoring this symposium, we welcome the honest ponderings of Latter-day Saints and their friends and expect that everyone will approach all issues, no matter how difficult, with intelligence and good will.
