The Two-Year College English Association
of the
National Council of Teachers of English

National TYCA unites teachers of English committed to the teaching and study of English in the two-year college to advance the profession and provide a national voice for the two-year college in postsecondary education.  Recognizing the unique institutional character of the two-year college, open to all students, TYCA is further committed to student diversity in culture, age, background, ability and goals, and the critical role of literacy required in a democratic society.

 ANNOUNCING 2003 TYCA AWARD WINNERS!!

Frank Madden, SUNY Westchester Community College, Valhalla, NY,  is the recipient of  the 2003 Nell Ann Pickett Service Award.  The award is granted each year to an outstanding teacher whose vision and voice have had a major impact on two-year college professional-ism and whose teaching exemplifies such outstanding personal qualities as creativeness, sensitivity, and leadership.

 

The second annual TYCA Outstanding Programs in English Awards were presented at the CCCC Convention in New York in March, 2003.  Howard Community College, Columbia, MD; Northern Virginia Community College--Woodbridge Campus, Woodbridge, VA; the Community College of Rhode Island,  Warwick, RI; and Tidewater Community College, Norfolk, VA were recognized for their outstanding programs in English.  Bergen Community College, Paramus, NJ; Suffolk County Community College--Ammerman Campus, Selden, NY; and Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, CA received honorable mention recognition.  For more information on the winners, click here.   

    

 Loretta Kasper was awarded the 2002 TETYC Best Article of the Year Award for her article " Technology as a Tool for Literacy in the Age of Information" in the December 2002 issue of TETYC.   



 
        
2003 FAME AND SHAME AWARDS

FAME Winner-- Tracey Wong Briggs of USA Today
Briggs April 22, 2002 article, "Two Years Changed Lives: New Arrivals Pursue Dreams" focused on the All-USA Community and Junior College Academic teams and honored 20 students for their academic achievements, leadership, and service.

SHAME Winner--Heald College in California
A commercial for Heald College contained a dishonest and disparaging portrayal of the two-year college classroom and cost of education.
