The Spring System

The Spring Project at Sun Microsystems was a research project between 1989 and 1995 that investigated new technologies for constructing operating systems and for simplifying distributed programming.

As part of this work, we constructed the Spring distributed operating system. Spring was a highly modular, object-oriented operating system, which was focused around a uniform interface definition language. Spring was intrinsically distributed, with all system interfaces being accessible both locally and remotely.

There is also another unrelated Spring project, the Spring realtime system at the University of Massachusetts. We simply both happened to choose the same name!
