Here it is: my new Heart of Evil mini-level, the Alamo

This consists of a short introductory level and a big main level. I've produced a mission briefing which is included in the download, or you can read it online here.

N.B. I've taken a pretty relaxed attitude to r_speeds with this level, so I wouldn't recommend it on lower spec machines.

Heart of Evil has been featured in PC Zone UK, they've reviewed it and you can get the mod in the DVD edition. They gave it 83%, saying that:

"HoE is packed full with ideas. There is a wealth of new weapons, sounds and textures, each showing a real passion for the mod and an all-pervading sense of fun, which is repeatedly brought to the fore with the wacky situations and characters you'll encounter"

but complained that some of the maps are blocky. And it seems that we've been mentioned in PC Gamer US again, although I haven't seen it myself and don't have a photo, on Page 70, in "BEST Moments in 2002 Gaming", it apparently says:

"Seeing the opening text to Half Life Mod, Heart of Evil 3 extolling that it's "the only Half-Life Mod to be officially endorsed by Satans c**k

(and it didn't read "cook")."

They seem to have really gone for that, it's the second time they've mentioned it! I think if I ever make a commercial game of any kind I will try and ensure that Satan's cock plays a prominent role, in the hopes of getting a good review from the US edition of PC Gamer. Heart of Evil has on seperate occasions been officially endorsed by: the Pope, Mao Tse Tung, Satan's cock, and Satan's gigantic throbbing purple cock, and none of them thought the maps were blocky (hah!).

I also found, by chance, an old C4 Software review of epsiodes A,B,C and D, which I hadn't seen before. They gave us 81%, seems like a long time ago now. Ah, happy memories... I've added a reviews section to this website where you can read all the reviews I've come across so far.

I've also added an About section, where you can read... about the mod. You can also read the mission briefing for a mini-level I've been making on and off for the last few months, called "Alamo". This mini-level is complete now, it's just undergoing beta testing, so I should be able to release it shortly.

Walkthrough for episode f finished!

Monday, 9 December 2002

Heart of Evil has been featured in the DVD edition of PC Format UK. They gave it 90% and a little gold circle which probably means something good, saying:

"This mod has been around for a while, having been released in chunks over the last year or so. But it's finished now and cured of the bugs that plagued it. (um, most of them) It's a Single Player Half-Life mod that mixes Vietnam war films and B-movie zombie carnage. It's huge and entertaining. Of the single-Player mods we've seen recently, this is one of the best, despite the Half-Life engine beginning to look clunky in its old age. Pros: Huge single-player experience. Cons: Shoddy in some parts. Score: 90% 'Better than some professional FPS games we've seen.' (I wonder which ones?)"

Planet Half-Life has reviewed Heart of Evil on their Mod of the Week feature.

And, ooh look, it's a new website design! Now featuring all kinds of fancy shit.

I uploaded version 1.02 in split format: 0 1 2 3 4 5 and I uploaded a patch to convert version 1.01 to version 1.02.

Saturday, 5 October 2002

I have uploaded a slightly improved version of Heart of Evil, version 1.02, which fixes some of the bugs that people have been experiencing with the last one:
- The zombies are back to their usual difficulty - last time I accidentally made them about 2-3 times as hard as they should be. D'oh!
- Barney remains in the same position throughout the boat ride at the beginning of episode f. Hopefully he will not now get stuck in it and fail to open the door at the end, as was sometimes happening. The boat may still shake though, and I don't advise bringing marines in it.
- That irritating door opening bug, where you can't seem to open doors so easily after they've been opened once, has been fixed.
- The sniper rifle zoom crosshairs are fixed.
and some other minor stuff that I can't remember. The download is here. So far I have only uploaded the unsplit version. If this version is sound then I will try and get it onto some more servers besides just FilePlanet.

Hangar 16 have reviewed Heart of Evil! It got 5/5, with an annoyance rating of "Fine in some places, astronomical in others". Whatever can he mean? :-P Go check it out.
