The Mysterious Wank In The Night
Hi, Guess I'll be the first one to step up to the plate here.

I spent last weekend at MediaWest Con. A fun time, partied with friends, picked up some new fanzines, etc.

During the second night of the con, someone hung flyers in all the elevators exhorting people not to buy zines from a certain zine agent who had been trashed not too long ago on LJ. This person was there selling, so needless to say she (or one of her friends)saw the flyers and told the conn comm, who pulled them all down and hung one at the security desk, with a note on it that said such things wouldn't be allowed.

Now, what makes this truly wanky and low-class (to me)is that whoever made the flyers didn't sign their name to them (am I surprised?) but that they gave the URLs for several LJs as places to find more information. Now I don't know if any of these folks were at the con, but if they weren't--well, hell, did they know someone was going to put up the flyer with their LJ names on it?

If you're not going to have the balls to sign your own name, don't sign someone else's [/wank]

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

See, now THIS is an example of exactly what I had in mind with this comm! Truly an example of public wank.

Beautiful first post. I applaud you for stepping out and breaking the ice here.

The internet(tm)! It's where I go for all my truth...

That goes double for lj, of course.

I know the person who did this (no, I will not tell). I don't know if anybody else was involved - she didn't say so, and it certainly didn't require a group effort. But yes, it was wanky in the extreme. It's also against the rules (somebody did something similar in the dealers room the first or second year we were in the 'new' hotel, and the concomm were not pleased), and the sort of thing that can get you banned from the con.

I think she meant well, but not only was it pretty skaggy, it probably did more to generate sympathy for the subject than it did to warn the public.

You have my sympathies.

It's rather sad how well-meaning acts by people who don't really think things through can backfire rather badly. Especially when they involve other people who haven't given consent.

No kidding. If I was there and saw that, I would've likely immediately thought "Well, THAT'S certainly catty" and not care to find out any more details about the situation due to that bad first impression of the person who did this. Hell, I might even consider getting the zine just to spite the person.

Guess even the best of intentions cannot escape the wank.

Dude! I heard about this but coming late to the party, I never saw it. However, I did end up having a long conversation with a friend over said agent. The zine agent in question is a friend of mine. I'm not rushing to her defense because, hey, she can take care of herself. And I don't want to get in the middle of this. Hmm, I think I may know who posted the flyers...in case I'm wrong, I'm not saying.

Truly a rich public wank.

Wow... one poster's acquainted with the perp, and another's acquainted with the target. It really is a small world (in fandom) after all. O_O

To make it really scary, Phosfate and I have known each other for years.

Fandom is a very small incestious world, it is.

There are small South American jungle tribes that worship Phosfate.
