Isles of Scilly Local Eduation Authority (LEA)
Isles of Scilly LEA is the second smallest LEA in the country,
containing only 1 Federated school, with a total of 265 pupils.
In a recent re-organisation all local schools were federated into
the Isles of Scilly (Voluntary controlled) Federated school. Prior
to this move there was 1 primary and 1 secondary on St. Mary's and
1 primary school on each of the following Off-Islands (St. Agnes,
St. Martin's, Tresco). All centres continue to run and are linked
by centralised administration. There is a single governing body
and a management structure for the school covering all centres.
This move will improve many aspects of school life within the authority.
Teachers will be able to work closer together sharing good practice
and resources. Decision making will be more 'joined' up and continuity
between each Key Stage improves.
The LEA is working constantly to improve standards of education
across the islands. The LEA has an Educational Plan that identifies
needs within the Isles and how they are to be addressed.

Isles of Scilly (Voluntary controlled) Federated
School
Headteacher: Mr Paul Mulligan
Status of School: Federated
Total Number of Pupils: 265 (January 2002)
Within the Federation are five centres, each with their own unique
character. Numbers of pupils in each centre are small in comparison
to National Averages. St. Mary's houses the two largest schools,
Carn Gwaval Primary (111 pupils) and the Secondary (117 pupils).
Tresco has 24 pupils, St. Agnes 7 pupils and finally St. Martin's
with 6 pupils.
When Off-Island pupils reach Secondary age they are provided with
a place at Mundesley hostel (Mon - Thurs), so they don't have to
travel by boat every day to school. There is usually an average
of between 25 and 30 pupils at any one time staying at the hostel.

Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE)
There is no post-16 provision on the Islands, students leaving
the Isles of Scilly (VC) Federated School attend at colleges/schools
with 6th forms on the mainland. Both of which are funded through
the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). A grant is available from
the LSC to each student in support of accommodation costs for the
academic year. The LEA funds three return trips per year to the
school/college.
Careers and Pastoral Support
The Islands have access to Careers Advice and a Personal Adviser
for pupils through the Connexions Service. It is recognised that
this is an important aspect of Education, and so there are regular
visits to the Islands to provide support and advice for school children
and the local population. Contact Tiffany Coates (Connexions) for
more details / advice on 01209 315171.
