Once you work with someone and develop a certain rapport, the informal communications begin.  The informal network is a big part of any enterprise.

This informal network often has it's own language, also.  If you don't know the code, you can't understand what the organizations informal leaders are doing or thinking.  Informal leaders exist in organizations; don't you doubt it.  The organization chart shows the formal, authoritative power structure but there is probably another one.

Find it and you may know who smurf is.  And others.  Like the "real" mentors in the company.  Who do the employees really go to when they have a problem.  In management, or any organization, there is an underground network.
