Though Yoshi's Island is technically an old game, the GBA version--basically an exact port of the original--looks and feels as fresh and new as ever. The game's truly inspired visuals are matched only by its consistently fun gameplay, making Yoshi's Island not just one of the best action games for Nintendo's latest portable system, but also one of the best platformers for any console this year.

Simply put, Yoshi's Island would make an excellent addition to anyone's collection of Game Boy Advance games. Its beautiful, inspired visuals and consistently fun and inventive gameplay make a landmark achievement in one of gaming's most beloved genres, and even though its star isn't Nintendo's famous plumber, the game itself is every bit as good if not better than any other Mario title to date. Besides being a superb game on its own merits and even by today's high standards, Yoshi's Island is also a great little game to have on the go.

The Game Boy Advance version of Yoshi's Island is essentially a straight port of the original Yoshi's Island for the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which was actually released many years ago. Still, Yoshi's Island looks fantastic on the GBA, and it's just as fun as it is good-looking, thanks to its distinctive gameplay. The star of Yoshi's Island is actually the green lizard Yoshi, who must join forces with an infant version of Mario to rescue baby Luigi. To that end, you'll have access to lots of intriguing special abilities, including Yoshi's well-known tendency to swallow his enemies whole, as well as Yoshi's new ability to lay eggs, then bounce them off of walls like billiard balls. Yoshi's Island also has consistently creative and enjoyable level design--Yoshi is pit against a colorful array of great boss monsters, and he'll have the opportunity to change his shape into a car, a submarine, or a helicopter, all of which change the way he moves and plays. You might not like the fact that Mario and Luigi are reduced to a couple of crying babies, but you'll be hard-pressed not to like the excellent graphics and terrific level design in this outstanding Game Boy Advance game.
