"Save the Ten Commandments" Campaign Underway

By John Jessup
Washington Correspondent
November 18, 2003

Organizers plan to collect over a million signatures by next September to oppose what they call judicial tyranny.

CBN.comWASHINGTON, D.C. — A new movement is underway to protect the public display of the Ten Commandments. The movement's organizers warn that federal judges are harming America by stripping it of its religious heritage.

The unanimous vote to strip Justice Roy Moore from his post as Alabama's highest ranking judicial official is being met with growing support to restore religious values in America. Monday marked the official start of a campaign called "Save the Ten Commandments - God's Contract with America."

Organizers plan to collect over a million signatures by next September to oppose what they call judicial tyranny. They claim federal judges are legislating a new morality from the bench which is slowly stripping away the nation's historic Judeo-Christian heritage.

Alan Keyes, chairman of the board of the Declaration Foundation, said, "The true lawbreakers are on the bench. Do we support a Constitutional system or a system of dictatorship by the federal judges? …I believe this issue of judicial tyranny has galvanized many people who've never been political in the past."

Represented by religious and political leaders from more than 20 organizations, or by signatures from leaders of groups like CBN, Focus on the Family, and The Family Research Council, speakers at Vision America's press conference said they stand beside Justice Moore and his proposed bill to limit the power of the courts when it comes to separation of church and state.

In an interview with CBN last week, Moore said he believes federal judges are trying to take God out of public consciousness. To some, that act has dangerous implications.

Rabbi Yehuda Levin of Jews for Morality said, "Hail storms in Los Angeles. Floods and winds which the Associated Press reports ‘Wreak havoc across the country.’ God is sending us a message."

The group's leaders say their effort to publicly acknowledge God is not only essential to the survival of the religious life, but essential to the survival of the nation.
