African-American women, breast cancer, and abortion; Atheists on the 'offensive' Matt C. Abbott May 7, 2007 According to a May 5, 2007 story on wbbm780.com:
According to L.E.A.R.N.
'According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, black women are more than 3 times as likely as white women to have an abortion. 'On average, 1,452 black babies are aborted every day in the United States. 'This incidence of abortion has resulted in a tremendous loss of life. It has been estimated that since 1973 Black women have had about 10 million abortions. Michael Novak had calculated 'Since the number of current living Blacks (in the U.S.) is 31 million, the missing 10 million represents an enormous loss, for without abortion, America's Black community would now number 41 million persons. It would be 35 percent larger than it is. Abortion has swept through the Black community like a scythe, cutting down every fourth member. 'A highly significant 1993 Howard University study showed that African American women over age 50 were 4.7 times more likely to get breast cancer if they had had any abortions compared to women who had not had any abortions.' Also, here is an article about a recently-published, and widely reported on, study that has asserted there is no link between abortion and breast cancer. Here is a story about atheists going on the political offensive in the U.S. Several years ago, I had the, er, "privilege" of appearing on atheist activist Rob Sherman's Chicago area radio show to discuss the topic of abortion. To his credit, Mr. Sherman was respectful toward me, and while I obviously do not share his atheistic views, he did (does?) make known that he opposed late-term abortions. Not that he's pro-life, mind you, since he doesn't oppose early-term abortions. Plus, he does support pro-abortion politicians. But considering we have several "Catholic" politicians who seem to oppose any restrictions on abortion, I suppose we should be kind of glad that such a vocal atheist is at least not entirely pro-abortion. If there's hope for the likes of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), there's also hope for Rob Sherman and company. Matt C.
