FARMER SLAIN AT STERKFONTEIN CAVES WORLD HERITAGE SITE
June 1. The Transvaal Agricultural Union reports that "even Africa's cradle of humankind" is not immune to the scourge of farm murders.
South Africa's world famous Sterkfontein Caves World Heritage Site was the scene of the murder of prominent farmer Dennis Peters last weekend. He died instantly after being shot in the head while his son Tanner (19) was wounded by attackers.
In North West province, police arrested a 21-year-old black man for the murders of farmer Gawie and his wife Dorothea van der Merwe who had been viciously attacked and suffocated.
The figure to date of farm murders since 1991 stands at at least 1,100 according to the TLU. We revised our summary accordingly.
