Panama replaces Guatemala at CONCACAF 2004 Olympic Final Round Qualification 12.1.04 - CONCACAF announced today that Panama replaces recently suspended Guatemalan team at the 2004 Women’s Olympic Final Round Qualification scheduled for Costa Rica from 25 February – 5 March. Guatemala is now ineligible to participate in this event due to the suspension, by both CONCACAF and FIFA, of their National Association FEDEFUTBOL (Federación de Fútbol de Guatemala). COMPLETE STORY Panama had finished tied for first place (with four points) in the Central American Zone Preliminary Series E but lost out to the host Guatemala in the triangular event, which also included Belize, on goal difference (+18 to +13). CONCACAF also unveiled today the complete fixtures for the Women’s Olympic Final Round that will feature two groups of four teams playing in two venues in Costa Rica: Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero in Heredia; Estadio Nacional in San José. Canada, Jamaica, Panama and Costa Rica are in Group A, while Group B is composed of Haiti, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and the USA. The event kicks off on Wednesday, 25 February 2004 and will have six consecutive first round doubleheaders (three each in Groups A and B) until Sunday, 1 March. The top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals on 3 March at the Estadio Nacional, with Group A winner taking on Group B Runner-up and Group B winner facing the runner-up from Group A. The semifinal losers will meet in the third-place game on 5 March at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero, while the two finalists, who will also meet on 5 March, earn CONCACAF’s two berths to the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
