Ambassador William D. Montgomery

Ambassador William MontgomeryWilliam D. Montgomery was selected as Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro upon the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in November 17, 2000, and was confirmed as Ambassador on November 15, 2001. His previous assignment was as US Ambassador to Croatia from January 1998. He has been a career Foreign Service Officer since 1974. He was Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State for Bosnian Peace Implementation from January 1996 to September 1997. He served as Ambassador to Bulgaria from October, 1993 to January 1996. He was Deputy Chief of Mission in Sofia from June, 1988 to May, 1991. His other assignments have included Economic-Commercial Officer in Belgrade, Commercial Officer in Moscow, Political Officer in Moscow, Deputy Chief of Mission in Dar Es Salaam, as well, as assignments in Washington. He was Executive Assistant to Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger and then Deputy Secretary of State Clifton Wharton. He speaks Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Croatian.

While in Croatia, he received the Order of Prince Trpimir from the Government of Croatia. At the end of his tour as Ambassador to Bulgaria, he was awarded the Order of the Stara Planina, First Class, by the Government of Bulgaria. At the end of his tour as Deputy Chief of Mission, the Bulgarian Government awarded him the Order of the Madara Horseman, First Class, He has one Distinguished Honor Award, two individual and two group Superior Honor Awards, and one Meritorious Honor Award from the Department of State. He is also a recipient of an ABA-CEELI award for his efforts in promotion the rule of law in Central and Eastern Europe.

Ambassador Montgomery has a BA in Psychology from Bucknell University and a Masters of Business Administration in International Business from George Washington University. While working for the Department of State, he attended the National War College for its one-year program in 1986-1987. He served in the U. S. Army from 1967 to 1970, including one year of service in Vietnam. His army decorations included the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal with "V", Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachute Badge, and Vietnam Service Medal. He is married to the former Lynne Germain.

They have three children, Alexander, age 21, Amelia, age 17 and Katarina, age 15.

William D. Montgomery je imenovan od strane predsednika za šefa misije u Ambasadi Sjedinjenih Američkih Država u Beogradu, u Srbiji i Crnoj Gori, nakon ponovnog uspostavljanja diplomatskih odnosa 17. novembra 2000. godine. Njegova nominacija za ambasadora je potvrđena od strane Senata 15. novembra 2001. godine. Pre prelaska na sadašnju dužnost bio je ambasador Sjedinjenih Američkih Država u Hrvatskoj od januara 1998. Profesionalno se bavi diplomatijom od 1974. Bio je specijalni savetnik Predsednika i državnog sekretara za sprovođenje mirovnog plana za Bosnu od januara 1996. do septembra 1997. godine. Bio je ambasador u Bugarskoj od oktobra 1993. do januara 1996. godine i zamenik šefa misije u Sofiji od juna 1988. do maja 1991. U prošlosti je takođe radio kao sekretar za ekonomsko-komercijalne poslove u Beogradu, sekretar za komercijalne poslove u Moskvi, sekretar za političke poslove u Moskvi, zamenik šefa misije u Dar es Salaamu, kao i na različitim poslovima u Vašingtonu. Bio je izvršni pomoćnik državnog sekretara Lorensa Iglbergera i potom pomoćnika državnog sekretara Kliftona Vortona. Govori ruski, bugarski, srpski i hrvatski jezik.

Dok je radio u Hrvatskoj, dobio je Orden Princa Trpimira od hrvatske Vlade. Na kraju mandata u Bugarskoj, bugarska Vlada mu je dodelila Orden Stare Planine, Prvog reda. Po završetku rada u svojstvu zamenika šefa misije, bugarska Vlada ga je odlikovala i Ordenom konjanika Madare, Prvog reda. Nosilac je Nagrade za izuzetne zasluge, dve pojedinačne i dve grupne Nagrade za najviša dostignuća, kao i Nagrade za zasluge Stejt departmenta. Pokret za zakonodavstvo centralne i istocne Evrope pri Advokatskoj komori S.A.D. ga je odlikovao za zasluge u uvođenju vladavine prava u zemljama centralne i istočne Evrope.

Ambasador Montgomery je diplomirao psihologiju na Baknel univerzitetu i magistrirao poslovno upravljanje na katedri za međunarodno poslovanje na univerzitetu Džordž Vašington. Dok je radio u Stejt departmentu pohađao je od 1986. do 1987. jednogodišnji program na Nacionalnom vojnom koledžu. Bio je pripadnik Vojske S.A.D. od 1967. do 1970. godine, od čega je godinu dana proveo u Vijetnamu. Nosilac je mnogih vojnih odlikovanja kao što su Bronzana zvezda, Vojna medalja za zasluge sa "V", Pešadijska borbena značka, Padobranska značka i Medalja za službu u Vijetnamu. Oženjen je Lynne, devojačko Germain.

Imaju troje dece, Aleksandra, starog 21 godina, Ameliju, staru 17 godina i Katarinu, staru 15 godina.
