Slight EDIT update - EDIT 0.7a
24 Jan 2004 by jhall
Eric Auer has posted an updated to the FreeDOS Edit program. Eric writes: Hi, I have modified EDIT a bit. Changes: New hotkeys ^N new ^O open ^S save Time display should now use country setting to decide am/pm & 24h display and proper separator (e.g. 23.59.59 & 11:59:59pm), blinking got fixed and alignment of time display for 1-digit hour values got fixed. A crash when displaying an error message for files >64000 bytes got fixed. Hope all fixes really do what they should do . Changed source files: readme, edit.lsm, edit.txt (source of edit.hlp), message.c (clock), dflat.h (version string), menus.c (new hotkeys), editbox.c (exclude new hotkeys from verbatim typing), calendar.c (now displays sth. like "ctrl-f4 to close"), edit.c (big file error message). edit07a.zip This has also been mirrored at ibiblio.

DOSEMU 1.2.0 released
20 Jan 2004 by jhall
DOSEmu is, of course, a PC emulator geared especially for DOS, so you can run your DOS applications under a UNIX system like Linux. DOSEmu version 1.2.0 has just been posted! Bart Oldeman writes: This release fixes many bugs (including security-related issues if DOSEMU is suid root) with respect to the previous stable release. It has easier configuration and installation from source, Unicode support, joystick support, fullscreen support in X, xterm mouse support (including Putty), large file support for file locking, and shows the running DOS program in X and xterm title bars. Many improvements were made to the DPMI support, sound support (SB16/Midi), VGA emulation in X, console support, networking(TUN/TAP), PIC emulation, terminal support, and I/O performance. Refer to www.dosemu.org/stable for more details.

New OpenWatcom 1.2
19 Jan 2004 by jhall
It's been mentioned on the lists somewhat, but a more public news item here seemed a good idea. SciTech announced that Open Watcom 1.2 has been released and is now available for download from the web site. This release contains a large number of new features, product enhancements and several fixes designed to bring Open Watcom to a higher level of quality and compatibility. Download version 1.2 here: (downloads). Read the announcement and "what's new" here: (announcement).

Arkady's MEM /C
19 Jan 2004 by jhall
Arkady Belousov has posted an updated version of his MEM utility. Arkady writes: added support for /C option, enhanced output formating and other useful things (see history.txt). This MEM is a different version than MEM from Bart Oldeman. This is intermediate edition, coming soon new features (see plans.txt). This is version 1.5b, and is available as both .zip and .rar at ibiblio. Please note: this version of MEM is maintained by Arkady, and is not the same official FreeDOS MEM that is maintained by Bart Oldeman. Arkady's MEM is forked from the 1.3 release of FreeDOS MEM.

New Undelete
19 Jan 2004 by jhall
Robert Platt has posted a new version of FreeDOS Undelete, and Eric Auer (maintainer of Undelete) has accepted this as "official". Robert writes: This Undelete introduces an MS-style interface as required by the TO-DO list. The old interface, which is flexible but more involved, can still be accessed by switches. An additional option allows files to be undeleted easily but still exported to a different disk, which is how the old interface recovers files. P.S. The MS-style interface doesn't support wildcards yet; it finds all un-deletable files in the specified directory. I'll take a look at full wildcard support once I've attended to my committments with the HELP command. Alternatively, I'm happy for someone else to add wildcards. This version can be downloaded at ibiblio as undelete-19jan04.zip.

UDMA 6.7 is out
17 Jan 2004 by jhall
Jack and Luchezar write: Just published UDMA 6.7. The former UDMA has been removed from the package due to lack of interest and the former UUDMA and UUDMAS have been renamed to UDMA and UDMAJR, respectively. They now have their initialisation code reduced and most importantly, have proved to run on the Intel FW82801CAM mobile south bridge used for example in the Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 we tested (albeit its BIOS turned out to support UDMA by itself Please include UDMA, not UDMAJR in FreeDOS distributions. The package can be downloaded at web site. This release has also been mirrored at ibiblio.

More on Dell and FreeDOS
15 Jan 2004 by jhall
Chuck found that US customers can purchase Dell systems with FreeDOS: Perhaps this is old news but browsing on Dell's Small Business site, I noticed that they are now offering select systems bundled with FreeDOS. From the web site: The n series features select popular models from the DimensionTM , OptiPlexTM and Dell PrecisionTM desktop lines sold without a Microsoft® operating system. Offered for IT professionals who want control over operating system development and installation, n series desktops are available with a copy of the FreeDOSTM open-source operating system included in the box, ready to install.
Update: (16 Jan 2004) This may look like a repeat, but it's not. Before, FreeDOS on Dell wasn't available to US customers - it was Canadian customers only.

New EMM386
14 Jan 2004 by jhall
Tom Ehlert writes: Hi all, announcing EMM386 0.7. (Download) The only significant change are 2 new versions, emm38664.exe and himem64.exe, both support > 64MB memory, where the old versions are limited to <= 64MB. If you want to use >64MB memory, simply replace emm386 with emm38664 and himem with himem64. If both are stable (I don't get too many bug reports), they will replace the old versions completely with the next release. This has also been mirrored at ibiblio.

DOS Emulation Under Linux
10 Jan 2004 by jhall
Not really "FreeDOS in the news", but something worth mentioning anyway. I just noticed that slashdot posted an article this this morning about DOS Emulation Under Linux. The "Howto" the post links to seems rather basic. No information on how to configure DOSEmu - it's very much "as-is". FreeDOS does get mentioned briefly, but no link to FreeDOS.org.

Whatis 1.1
6 Jan 2004 by jhall
Robert Platt writes: I've upgraded Whatis and Apropos: they now display help on programs in alphabetic order. These commands are handy for finding your way around the utilities in the FreeDOS installation. They're based on the Linux commands of the same name. [...] It's pretty small: the zip is just 24k including source code. [...] There is a limitation, that whatis and apropos aren't aware of the internal commands, because they take there information from the LSM files in the \appinfo directory.
