Victor Koman isn't just a libertarian science fiction writer; he's an award-winning libertarian science fiction writer. Three of his novels have won the Prometheus Award, given by the Libertarian Futurist Society to the best libertarian science fiction novel of the year. Koman won the award in 1988 for The Jehovah Contract, an audacious account of a hit man hired to assassinate God; in 1990 for Solomon's Knife, a medical thriller about abortion; and in 1997 for Kings of the High Frontier, the story of a free-market effort to explore space. He is the only novelist to win the Prometheus Award three times. Despite the accolades, Koman said it is not easy getting publishers to buy novels with pro-liberty themes. "I can personally attest to how hard it is to be a libertarian and a writer in today's cultural and publishing climate," he wrote in Liberty magazine (May 1998). "The pressure to give up and write totally non-libertarian [material] is overwhelming." That bias hasn't stopped Koman from producing an impressive body of work. In addition to publishing six novels, he has pseudonymously co-written two novels for the SPACEWAYS saga; contributed short stories to Galaxy and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction; and been published in hardcover anthologies such as Free Space and Dark Destiny II. Koman has also enjoyed modest success in motion pictures: he appeared as an extra in Star Trek The Motion Picture, CyberZone, Nightshade, and Little Miss Magic. Some critical praise for Koman's work: * Koman's novels "deserve a place on every libertarian's bookshelf. Kings of the High Frontier is the Atlas Shrugged of the nineties [and] an explicit, unapologetic, radical, hardcore libertarian work." -- Claire Wolfe, The Libertarian Enterprise (November 15, 1996) * Kings of the High Frontier "is set to inspire a new generation of freedom-minded people." -- Stephen Dawson, Free_Enterprise.com (September 25, 1998) * Kings of the High Frontier is "a living embodiment of libertarian futurism." -- Victoria Varga, Liberty, May 1998 -- Bill Winter |
