History That what was arguably the most conservative city in Australia gave rise to some of the most anarchistic bands of the Australian punk rock era has long been cause for amazement. Brisbane's The Saints, The Fun Things, Razar and The Leftovers were an obvious backlash to an oppressed society in the mid-to-late 1970s. Writer Clinton Walker described The Leftovers as Australia's first true punks in the Sex Pistols mould: obnoxious, anarchic, anti-social, powerful, violent and with a strong self-destructive bent. The Leftovers suffered all the setbacks befitting a band of their nature (including continuous harassment from the local constabulary), but were persistent enough to plough on and finally release a single in June 1979.
`Cigarettes and Alcohol'/`No Complaints', `I Only Panic when There's Nothing to Do' (500 copies) rates along with the first records from The Victims, The Saints, Radio Birdman, News, Scientists and The Fun Things as one of the classics of the late 1970s Australian punk rock era. In keeping with the spirit of the band's muse, some of the singles had `The Fucken Leftovers Hate You' rubber-stamped on the plain white sleeve. Not long after the single came out, The Leftovers fell apart. `No Complaints' later appeared on the 1989 compilation of Brisbane punk bands At The Solicitor's Request.
Michael Hiron went on to The Riptides, The Flaming Hands, Catchcry and Pineapples from the Dawn of Time. Johnny Gorman formed The Plug Uglies in 1986, but died in 1988. Hiron replaced Gorman (who was his brother) in Plug Uglies. Hiron produced the band's debut mini-album Knock Me Your Lobes (1989). The album line-up comprised Gorman, Roger Norris (vocals; ex-Other Voices), Mark Lock (bass) and Tina Stevens (drums). After that the line-up became Norris, Stevens, Hiron (guitar, bass), Clem Lukey (guitar; ex-Dum Dums, Pineapples from the Dawn of Time) and John Willsteed (bass, guitar; ex-Zero, Go-Betweens). That line-up contributed `All Done In' to rooArt's Various Artists album Youngblood II (1990).
Following The Leftovers' disintegration, Ed Wreckage spent time in gaol. Warren Lamond almost lived up to his death wish when he attempted suicide in the early 1990s. Glenn Smith died in 1995.
