| Preethi Prema Pranaya won Awards |

Kannada film director and publisher of Lankesh Patrike, late Lankesh had won awards for almost all the four off-beat films Pallavi, Khandavideko Maamsavideko, Anuroopa and Ellindobandavaru, that he had made. Similarly, his son Indrajith Lankesh, besides inheriting the publisher’s role, got into films too. Opting for commercial films, he has so far done three films, Tuntaata, Lankesh Patrike and Monalisa, with the last film doing good business. His sister Kavitha Lankesh too entered the celluloid world and started making her own style of films. Deviri and Preethi Prema Pranaya too won awards, besides getting an opportunity of getting screened at many international film festivals.
Preethi Prema Pranaya, her successful film of 2003, bagged three awards in the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu. This year Chennai Film Fans Association has announced the awards for the film. They are the Best Film, Best Music Direction - Manomurthy and Best Supporting Artiste - Anant Nag. “Though I am happy that my film bagged the three awards, I expected the best actor award for Anant Nag, instead of the supporting actor award” stated Kavitha Lankesh on the occasion.

| Munnabai M.B.B.S. in Kannada |

 he successful Hindi film Munnabai M.B.B.S. has made its foray into the Kannada field also. The film is already made in other languages. In Telugu mega star Chiranjeevi is playing Sankar Dada M.B.B.S, while in Tamil, it is Kamal Haasan appearing as Vasoolraaja M.B.B.S.. Now the film is being made in Kannada too.
But this may not be an interesting news, as many remakes have been made in Kannada since a long time. And in the last couple of years, some of the remakes were superhits and some are already in the making. But only when Munnabai ... is made in Kannada it attracts headlines. Because in Karnataka, if other language films are remade into Kannada before ten years of their release, there is no entertainment tax relief. But there is an exception. If the State or Central Government award winning films are remade even immediately, this ten year limitation doesn’t apply. Then how come Munnabai ... is being remade into Kannada, even before one year of its release in Hindi. Does the filmgoer have to pay the entertainment tax to see the film? When questioned about this, director D Rajendra Babu had no answer. But the interesting aspect about this, now comes into picture.
Since the original film was not only successful, but also had a message, Kannada film makers are expecting it to get an award. If this is so, they get the entertainment tax relief. If not, the Kannada audience have to pay the entertainment tax. In Kannada, the film is titled Uppi Dada M.B.B.S, (Uppi is hero Upendra’s pet name). The film also stars Gurudutt, Srinath, Anant Nag, director D Rajendra Babu, his actress wife Sumitra and their actress daughter Uma Sankari.
Produced by Bhanu Prakash, the film has music RP Patnaik and dialogue by Upendra himself. Shooting would take place at DKC Medical college and on sets.

| Meera Jasmine debuts in Kannada |

 t has already been reported that S Narayan is directing Dr Rajkumar’s third son Puneeth Rajkumar, whose first film Appu had Rakshita as his heroine. Ramya was the co-star in his second film and Veera Kannadiga starred Anitha. Now it is the turn of Meera Jasmine to play the lead opposite Puneeth in his fourth yet untitled film which was launched recently. Meera has already made a name in the rest of the South Indian languages. The film also stars Devaraj and Roja.

| Song canned for Pakkadmane Hudugi |

 akkadmane Hudugi is a remake of the popular Hindi film Padosan starring Sunil Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Saira Banu and Mehmood. The Kannada version stars Raghavendra Rajkumar in the lead role. He is acting in a Kannada film after a gap of six years. Recently a few songs were picturised for this film at Bangalore’s MG Road with heroine Ranjitha and 40 junior artistes. Others in the cast are Anant Nag, Mohan, Sumitra, Chitra Shenoy, Doddanna, Karibasavaiah and BK Sankar. Directed by MS Rajasekhar for producer Sekhar Karlekkaar, the film has choreography by Five Star Ganesh and dialogues by Mohan.

| Goudru ready for release |

 andesh Combines’ Goudru, produced by Sandesh Nagaraj, is ready for release. The preview of the film was organised recently at Badami House, Bangalore. Actor Vishnuvardhan saw the movie and applauded hero Ambarish and director S Mahendar’s efforts for making such a good movie with a rural backdrop. Mahendar has written the story, screenplay besides directing it. Cinematography by Chandru, choreography by Moogur Sunder, action by Palaniraj and lyrics and music by Hamsalekha are the major credits of the film which stars Ambarish, Devaraj, Meena, Sruthi, Chaitra and Karibasavaiah.

| Kanti faces censor problems |

 anti, which should have been released a couple of weeks ago, has been postponed, as it is facing censors trouble. Now it has been referred to the revising committee. According to some sources, it has not been cleared there also and has gone to the tribunal. Anupam Kher, president of the censor board, considering the state censor board’s decision has referred it to the tribunal. What is the reason for all this? The story - say the censors. According to the director, the story runs like this. A Kannada youth, living in Belgaum, loves a Maharashtrian girl. As the parents of the heroine are against the allaince, the hero fights all odds, and successfully comes back with the heroine, thus exhibiting the courage of the Kannada youth. The love between the lovers belonging to two neighbouring states is the main reason for the censors to refer it to the tribunal. They might have felt that the language used by the hero to show his valour could be the reason. In some scenes he might have spoken ill of the Marathi language. They do not want a language to create any problems. Other than this, there is nothing like vulgarity or double meaning dialogues in the film that is delaying the film’s release. But all said and done, it has created a curiosity among the audience. Starring Murali, Ramya, Mumtaj, Govinda Namadev, Veena Krishna, Kishore, Chandru, Sobharaj, Prakash Shenoy and Gurumurthy, the film is produced by Kanakapura Srinivas and directed by Bharath, who has written the story and screenplay. Music by Gurukiran, cinematography by HC Venu and choreography by Chinni Prakash are the other credits.
