Dear readers,
We are asking you to donate money to sustain and expand the
work of the World Socialist Web Site.
On February 14, 2003 the World Socialist Web Site marked
its fifth anniversary. Back in February 1998, after one week
of publication, our total daily readership was less than 200.
Today, the WSWS is accessed by approximately 20,000 readers from
all over the world each day. This tremendous growth testifies
to the crucial role played by the World Socialist Web Site
in the resurgence of genuine socialist thought and the development
of a new international mass movement against social inequality,
political oppression, neo-colonialism and war.
In the course of five years, the World Socialist Web Site
has published more than 10,000 articles, ranging from news reports
and analyses of daily political events, commentary on social
issues, and essays on historical and philosophical questions
to movie reviews and critical appraisals of trends in many areas
of popular culture. Underlying all this work has been the unshakeable
conviction of the WSWS editorial board that great and history-making
movements for human progress and social liberation are nourished
by advanced ideas and the quest for truth.
The demands of the current political situation—the Bush
administration's war on Iraq, the growing attacks on democratic
rights, the deepening economic crisis and the international assault
on the living conditions of all working people—confront
the World Socialist Web Site with new responsibilities
and ever-more challenging tasks.
In order to respond more rapidly and effectively to the inquiries,
interests and political needs of our readers, we must update
the internet technology used in the daily publication of the
WSWS. We must also expand our coverage of important events and
struggles all over the world.
This will require substantial financial resources. The World
Socialist Web Site does not solicit advertisements. It is
independent of all commercial interests.
