History English-born singer Christie Allen (b. 1954) was voted Most Popular Female Performer at the 1979 and 1980 TV Week/Countdown Awards. Her bright pop sound has always been appreciated by her fans. Her hit singles `Falling in Love with Only You'/`Under Lock and Key' (#20, April 1979), `Goosebumps'/`Ships that Pass Through the Night' (#3, October 1979) and `He's My Number One'/ `Count Me Out' (#4, February 1980) were among the most successful releases on the Mushroom label to that time. `Goosebumps' alone sold 60000 copies.
Allen had been singing in Perth band Pendulum when she came to the attention of ex-Twilights guitarist Terry Britten. Britten had co-written hit singles for Cliff Richard and Tina Turner (`What's Love Got to Do With It', `We Don't Need Another Hero'). He returned to Australia to work with Allen. Her debut single was `You Know that I Love You'/`Nashville Tennessee' (September 1978). When `Goosebumps' took off, she toured with The Hot Band which comprised Greg Cook (guitar; ex-Cam-Pact, Mondo Rock), Max Chazan (guitar; ex-Rubes), Michael Hegerty (bass; Richard Clapton Band), Rick Puchala (drums; Richard Clapton Band) and Bruce Haymes (organ; ex-Rubes, Richard Clapton Band).
Christie's last four singles `Magic Rhythm'/ `Only Yes Will Do' (May 1980), `Baby Get Away'/ `Don't Stop' (August), `Switchboard'/`Monday Through Friday' (November) and `Don't Put Out the Flame'/`City Lights' (March 1981) were minor hits. Ill-health prevented her from touring and she retired from performing. By the 1990s she was back singing with country bands. |
