AMD Celebrates 25 Years In Austin
—25th year in Austin marked with a proclamation from the City of Austin and celebration with employees, community leaders and Lance Armstrong—
AUSTIN, TX -- October 27, 2004 --AMD (NYSE: AMD) today celebrates its first 25 years in Austin, TX. Founded in Silicon Valley in 1969, AMD began operations in Austin in the fall of 1979 with 72 employees. Today, the global technology company employs more than 3,000 employees in Austin where it designs industry-leading 64-bit microprocessors, low-power embedded processors and operates a state-of-the-art semiconductor manufacturing facility, AMD Fab 25, which produces Flash memory – a pervasive technology that is powering the rapid growth in digital devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and DVD players.

Each year AMD makes contributions of time, capital, technology and in-kind goods to more than 75 nonprofits and schools in the Austin area. Since 1987, the year AMD began tracking community investments, the company has donated $8.2 million in cash contributions and approximately $4.5 million in in-kind donations to the Austin community. AMD contributed an additional $1.4 million to match Austin employee gifts of time and money to 742 nonprofits, schools and universities. Since 1995, AMD employees have volunteered more than 40,000 hours to area charities and have donated more than 6,000 units of blood to the Central Texas Blood and Tissue Center. Last year alone, more than 600 AMD employees volunteered 11,500 hours in support of more than 100 community-based organizations, schools and universities in the Austin area, including Del Valle ISD, the Capital Area Food Bank, GirlStart and Family Eldercare.

To recognize the company for its commitment to the local community and its presence as a major local employer over the past 25 years, AMD will be honored with a proclamation from the City of Austin. The proclamation, which officially recognizes October 27, 2004 as AMD’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, will be presented tonight by Austin City Councilmember Betty Dunkerley at a private event that will include employees, local community leaders and State Comptroller Carol Keeton Strayhorn. The celebration will be highlighted by a special presentation from Lance Armstrong, Austin’s own six-time champion of the legendary Tour de France and leader of the AMD sponsored USPS Pro Cycling Team presented by Berry Floor.
