Neptunes hook girl turned solo star mixes sugar and spice on her latest — and best
Reviewed by Joseph Patel
The title of Kelis’s new single, “Milkshake,” is her euphemism for a woman’s, er, double-scooped treats, and like the innuendo of its atonal refrain (“My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard”), her third album delivers on its confectionary teases. What Kelis lacks in R&B pipes, she makes up for with the supersize sass she’s brought to countless Neptunes-produced hooks (ODB’s “Got Your Money,” Busta Rhymes’s “What It Is”): She’s as good playing a hair-twisting, gum-popping tart on “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” as an all-grown-up cock-blocker on the crackling funk ditty “Trick Me.” Throughout, she leaves mentors Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo for the warm embrace of soul merchants Raphael Saadiq, Dallas Austin and Outkast’s André 3000 (the playful “Millionaire”): It’s a declaration of independence, and she pulls it off stunningly.
