Recommended Books & Films on Korea

Book Review: Love in a Season of Ideology by Chang Song-nak -- This unusual love story by Chang Song-nak, a North Korean refugee, is loosely based on real people caught in the turmoil of the Cold War.  Even amidst of the barbaric war atrocities, true love persists against all odds.  The story begins with the main character of the novel Seil, a young son of a medical doctor in North Korea, rescuing a destitute little girl Suni whose mother is tortured to death by savage Japanese police for harboring her brother, a Kim Il Sung guerrilla fighter.

Film Review: The Unsung Heroes (이름 없는  영웅들) -- This movie from North Korea is about a North Korean spy ring's exploits in South Korea during the Korean War.  It is based loosely on non-fictional real people and real events. It includes a cast of real people as well as fictional figures highly dramatized.

Video: Silence Broken - The Korean Comfort Women -- The National Asian American Telecommunications Association (NAATA) presents SILENCE BROKEN: KOREAN COMFORT WOMEN, a candid and emotional documentary by filmmaker Dai Sil Kim-Gibson about Korean women forced into sexual servitude by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.

Willow Tree Shade -- Impressive life story of Susan Ahn Cuddy a pioneer Korean American woman. She lived an immigrant life in the early 1900's in California and became the first Asian woman officer in the United States forces during WWII. She was the Navy's first female gunnery officer and later went on to work for US Navy Intelligence and NSA. She is the American born daughter of one of Korea's greatest patriots and follower of American democracy Dosan Ahn Chang Ho.
