PROTEST:

Fjord Line may face boycott

Carin Pettersson 13.12.04 11:59

The International Transport Workers’ Federation threaten to boycott Fjord Line after the company announced that it may move from Norway in order to get Baltic salaries onboard.

The International Transport Workers’ Federation informed of possible boycotts in order to prevent Fjord Line from moving abroad. The actions come as a protest against the flagging-out and establishing salaries based on the Baltic level.

«People onboard should be paid in accordance to the salary level at the country where the boat operates,» said Kjell Berg, deputy leader at Norsk Sjømannsforbund (Norwegian sailors association) to NRK.

He said he thought the boycott will be effective in all the ports Fjord Line visit both in Norway, Denmark, and Britain.

Fjord Line said it takes the threat of boycott seriously and have arranged a meeting with Norsk Sjømannsforbund Wednesday, reported the Norwegian television channel NRK.

Fjord Line has annoyed both Norwegian Seamen’s Union and Norsk Sjømannsforbund because the shipping company wants to hire Baltic seamen and move the business to the Faroe Islands. The reason for the planned move is that as of New Year’s, the shipping companies will no longer benefit from the net salary arrangement for seamen.
