West End Star Elaine Paige to Host BBC Radio Program

By Andrew Gans
11 Aug 2004

Elaine Paige, the London musical theatre star who made her Broadway debut in Sunset Boulevard, will host a new talk show for BBC Radio 2 this fall.

Paige is just one of several U.K. names who will host new radio programs for the British station. Dermot O'Leary, Lulu, Mark Lamarr, Bob Harris, Helen Mayhew and Desmond Carrington will all be part of BBC Radio 2's new season, which commences Sept. 4.

Paige's program will begin airing Sept. 5 at 1 PM and will feature music from the stage and screen. The program will feature a "weekly competition, listener requests and Elaine in conversation with some of the people who have created and starred in the greatest musicals of all time." In a statement Paige said, "I am so excited to be joining BBC Radio 2. I'm really looking forward to this new challenge ... and all without having to put on lots of make up and a hot and heavy costume!"

Lesley Douglas, BBC Radio 2's Controller adds, "I believe that these programmes and presenters provide Radio 2 with a line-up for the autumn which is unrivalled. It’s wonderful to have talent such as Dermot, Elaine and Lulu joining forces with our existing presenters. I’m particularly pleased that Desmond Carrington has agreed to launch a brand new show and format bringing his expertise and unique style to mid weeks."

Arguably Britain's most successful musical theatre actress, Elaine Paige has starred on the London stage in Evita, Cats, Chess, Anything Goes, Piaf, Sunset Boulevard and The King and I. She made her Broadway debut to much acclaim in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, and her recordings are numerous. Paige recently appeared in the New York City Opera's production of Sweeney Todd, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination for her performance as Mrs. Lovett.
