Facilities for the Forensic DNA Evidence International Training Workshop, Beijing, November 23-25, 2004

The international training workshop on forensic DNA evidence will take place at the new campus of Beijing People's Police College (¡°BPPC¡±, website www.bppc.edu.cn ), the consolidated police training center for greater Beijing and the campus of the Capital Police. BPPC moved to its new, modern campus approximately one year ago, in September 2003. Located in the Changping District in northwest Beijing near the Ming Tombs and Badaling Great Wall, BPPC's new Changping campus covers approximately 2 kilometers and includes DNA labs, a large crime scene simulation area (including simulated residential neighborhoods, stores, and banks), state-of-the-art lecture and training facilities, and modern trainee dormitories and housing for faculty and experts. These facilities will be able to accommodate over 100 program participants from 10 provinces, as well as the training program international faculty and invited legal experts and guests.

The BPPC was originally established in 1949 as the ¡°Public Security Bureau Public School,¡± and operated regularly until 1966, when it closed during the Cultural Revolution. The school was re-established in 1981 under the name of the ¡°Beijing People's Police School.¡± In 1984, this institution was accredited to offer baccalaureate degrees and was renamed as the ¡°Beijing People's Police College.¡± From 1984 to 2003, approximately 40,000 persons completed police training programs at BPPC, and a total of 83,000 persons received law enforcement education by the college. Currently, there are 7,411 registered undergraduates at BPPC, including 1,200 trainees for police certification, 794 police receiving continuing education, and 5,417 government cadres receiving law enforcement training either in certification programs (n=1,799) or bachelor's degree programs (n=3,618).

Program participants will also be invited to tour the laboratories of the Center of Forensic Sciences at Beijing Genomics Institute, approximately 20 minutes by car from BPPC.
