EVENTS

The District to open with four-day festival

American Nevada Co. will host a four-day Grand Opening celebration for its most recent project, The District at Green Valley Ranch, starting Thursday.

The new "metropolitan lifestyle center" will feature 400,000 square feet of dining, shopping and living space, and will include a variety of stores that are new to the Henderson area and to the valley in general.

The festivities are set to include an official grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting with Mayor Jim Gibson at 10 a.m. Thursday, followed by an evening performance by the Yacht Club Jazz Trio from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. On Friday, the 2-A-T Jazz Combo will perform from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., followed by a full day of activities, including strolling musicians, mimes, balloon artists and stiltwalkers through the day on Saturday, capped off by another performance by the Yacht Club Jazz Trio from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to win prizes, including a $500 shopping spree, a $1,500 spree, and a $2,500 shopping spree and a two-night stay at the Green Valley Ranch Resort.

Las Vegas Breakfast Club to meet

The Las Vegas Breakfast Club will hold its monthly meeting April 18 at the American Legion Hall, 425 Van Wagenen in Henderson. The speaker will be Omar Sofradzija, author of the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Road Warrior column, He will speak about the new monorail system. Breakfast will be served from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and the meeting will begin at 11 a.m. For more information, call 243-0293.

Vendors needed for women's expo

The Las Vegas Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center is seeking vendors for its second biannual All for Women Expo. The event is set for April 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature products and services just for women. The center staff is looking for health, food, fashion, fitness, career, jewelry, finance, entertainment, crafts, home, family product vendors, who can rent space for $50 or $75, depending on location. Spaces are limited to 60. The Leisure Center is located in Summerlin at 101 Pavilion Center Drive (west of Town Center, north of Charleston). For more information, call Denise at 229-1108.

Vocal Jazz Solo Night planned at CCSN

The Community College of Southern Nevada's version of "American Idol" will be presented today, at 7:30 p.m., in the Little Theater on the Cheyenne Campus, when members of the CCSN Jazz Singers present their Vocal Jazz Solo Night. Each member of the group will perform a wide range of material, including jazz standards, blues and musical theater. The Jazz Singers, under the direction of Mark Wherry, also will perform selections from their ensemble repertoire. The group and soloists will be accompanied by the Mike Montano Trio.

Hotel and restaurant show ready to go

The 25th annual Las Vegas International Hotel & Restaurant Show at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center is offering its first Career Fair today and Thursday in an effort to provide resources for students looking for employment opportunities within the hospitality industry. Show hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today, and 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. Students also will have the chance to join a tour to get a sneak peak at the back-of-the-house of three major hotel-casinos. Located on the show floor, the Career Fair will be open throughout the show. Scholarship benefit set for April 18

The Augustus society will hold its annual scholarship dinner Sunday at Russell's Restaurant, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. on the campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada. The featured speaker will be Paul Gianini, interim president of the college. To date, more than $500,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Italian-American students in Nevada. Las Vegas Bird Mart scheduled for April 25

The Las Vegas Bird Mart will be held on April 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Zelzah Shrine Temple located at 2222 W. Mesquite. Neon show will continue to glow

Because of popular demand, the Neon Unplugged: Signs from the Boneyard exhibit at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society has been extended through June 27.

"This has been one of the most popular exhibits the museum has seen," said Greta Brunschwyler, museum director. "People are continually stopping in and asking to see the signs." The exhibit features historic signs from Las Vegas' past stored outdoors in a neon boneyard, photos and an interactive technology exhibit that shows how the signs' colors are created. The museum, located at 700 Twin Lakes Drive, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for children under 17. For more information, call 486-5205.

Spring Art Exhibit runs through June 7

The Henderson Art Association will present its Spring Art Exhibit through June 7, at the Lake Las Vegas Reflection Bay Golf Club, 75 MiraLago Blvd., in Henderson. The featured artist will be watercolorist Vina Curtis. UNLV IT hosts open houses

The UNLV IT Academy will have open houses Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. April 21 and May 5 and 19. The open houses will provide information sessions about the UNLV Technology certification programs, including the MCSE, A+, Network+, Visual Basics, MCSA , MCDBA and MCSD.NET. Individuals will have the chance to meet and visit with the instructor and former students, view course material and visit the lab. There is no fee to attend the sessions. Las Vegas offers kids arts camp

Registration opens April 10 for TACK, the annual Arts Connection Kamp offered by the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. The eight-week-long camp is held Monday through Friday, June 7 through July 30, for children ages 7-12, at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. The full-day camp ($550), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers a full morning of theater classes, taught by staff from the award-winning Rainbow Company Youth Theatre, and a variety of dance and visual arts classes in the afternoon. Participants also will attend three performances of the Children's Summer Concert Series in July. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available. Parents must provide sack lunches and snacks. Children also may enroll in the half day ($300) session in either the morning, 9 a.m. to noon, or afternoon, 1 to 4 p.m. Scholarships, multiple family member discounts and flexible payment plans are available. Salvation Army needs food funds

The Salvation Army is seeking donations to its food fund. Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn has announced he will match funds through his Feinstein Million Dollar Challenge. Donations received between now and April 30 will be eligible for the matching funds program. Last year, 1,591 nonprofit agencies raised $53.7 million to help the needy. Weight-loss workshop to be held April 25

Jean Krueger, a weight-watcher leader, health expert, hypnotherapist and author of "Why the Weight? Dare to Be Great!" is conducting a free weight loss workshop on April 25, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Borders Bookstore located on 10950 W. Charleston Blvd. This event is open to the public. Beta Sigma Phi to mark Founders' Day

The Las Vegas City Council of Beta Sigma Phi, an international women's organization, plan to celebrate its annual Founders' Day celebration at 11:30 a.m. April 25 at the Dallas Ballroom of Texas Station. The event will include the installation of officers, recognition of chapter Women of the Year, 25- and 50-year members along with revealing of the chapter of the year. Annual Scout Expo set for April 24

The 2004 Annual Scout Expo is slated for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 24 at Lorenzi Park, on Washington Avenue, west of Rancho Drive. The theme is "America's Great Frontiers" and will feature more than 100 demonstration and interactive exhibits.
