Editorial Reviews
No longer available through Kemado, this 2004 breakthrough album is now available again on its original label: Subliminal Sounds. The third and globally astounding album from the young and talented Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes aka Dungen. Ta Det Lugnt is a beautiful multifaceted musical trip straight into your head and deep out in the Swedish forests. It offers Dungen's most exciting and adventurous recordings and features stunning musicianship, stellar vocals, Hammond B-3 organ, flute, violin, groovy bass, swinging drums, electric and acoustic guitars, screaming fuzz, and spellbinding Swedish folk-rock pop psych. Original Pitchfork rating: 9.3!

Oh AND the rest of Dungen's albums are fantastic too, but Ta Det Lugnt is by far the best. :)
Some critics have taken Estes to task for lavishing attentive detail to faithfully reproducing this sound without extending and refining it, and that while superlative melodies and gorgeous arrangements are both generous and plentiful, they mask a lack of true progressive insight. I sometimes feel this way about "Ta De Lungt" myself, until I get lost in tracks like "Festival" that resonate with a sense of innocent beauty, like a heavy scent of jasmine or patchouli on a warm spring day, or "Om Du Vore En Vakthund", its explosive mixture of percussive and woodwind instruments blending with heavily modulated electric guitar in a jazzy, up-tempo outburst providing the perfect soundtrack to explore the universe within. Despite its obvious intent of paying homage, there are passages of tranquil meditative beauty that bands currently mining the neo-psychedelic vein would be hard-pressed to match, and in my own opinion, pulses with a sense of mystical vitality. I definitely can recommend it.
Well, when I played it for the first time, I was rather disappointed. Let's be realistic, as adept as Dungen is musically his vocals are often discordant and sometimes even obnoxious. So whatever I like about the album is all about the music. Ta Det Lungt straddles a troika of styles: Prog, alt-rock, and psychedelic. The eclectic mix of songs often evokes the quirky style of Pavement.
On disc one, my favorite cuts are the psychedelic Bortglomd and Sluta Folja Efter, which is one of the cuts evocative of Pavement. The most execrable song is the god-awful Du Ar For Fin For Mig (sorry about no umlauts). If you are into prog, you will probably most enjoy Panda, Det Du Tanker Idag Ar Du I Morgon, Lejonet & Kulan, the aforementioned Bortglomd and Om Du Vore En Vakthund. Those who lean toward the style of Pavement should like Gjort Bort Sig, Festival, the title cut, Lipsill and the previously mentioned Sluta Folja Efter.
On the bonus disc, the only real stinker is the first cut, Tyst Minut. The next three are pretty decent especially Sjutton and the harder-edged Christopher. The final cut, Badsang, is just plain weird.
Overall, I am not too excited about Ta Det Lungt. I will listen to it occasionally, But I don't foresee it ever achieving heavy rotation in my home. If you don't know Dungen, he's at least worth a listen. Try to hear a few complete songs, then decide for yourself whether or not he merits any further scrutiny.
