Born in the Greek island of Ikaria at the eastern Aegean, on the 24th of July, 1924. He studied Biology in USA (Queen’s College, N.Y.) and Anthropology in the former USSR. In 1961 he defended his Ph.D. at the Moscow University, on: “The origins of the Greeks”. Until 1965 he worked in the Dep. of Anthropology of the Soviet Academy, leading research expeditions in Russia and abroad (Bulgaria, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Georgia - Caucasus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, etc.), contemporaneously teaching at the Moscow University. In 1965 he returned to Greece and since then continues with further anthropological studies (Ainou-Japan, Spain etc.), which throws light to the origins not only of the Balkanians, but of the other Europeans as well. At the same time he is occupied with the palaeoanthropological excavations of the Petralona cave and the Triglia open site in Chlakidiki, as well as of the prehistoric elephant site at Perdikkas - Ptolemais.

  In 1969 he was elected Vice-President of the 8th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences at Tokyo. In 1979 he was appointed President of the 3rd European Congress of Anthropology at Prague, which held its works in 1982 at Petralona. In 1971 he founded the Anthropological Association of Greece and in 1976 the Dep. of Palaeoanthropology-Spelaeology of the Greek Ministry of Culture. He is a member of the permanent International Council of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences of UNESCO and since 1987 a member of the N.Y. Academy of Science. He wrote 5 books and more than 100 scientific papers.
