The Indy MP3 Project ...

"From jazz and blues to rock-n-roll, Indianapolis music fans will find what they're looking for on one CD from our talented, local musicians."

-- Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson

INDY MP3 PROJECT
[ Introduction ]

Indianapolis is a city that is defined by many sounds that aren’t music. The sound of a basketball pounding the hardwood and the roar of a racecar circling the Speedway are a couple of things that come to mind when talking about "the sound of Indianapolis." Most people, however, don’t think of Indianapolis as a "music town." There’s no unique style of music linked to our city like Chicago’s blues or New Orleans’ jazz. Also, Indy’s contributions to the worldwide music community have been few and far between. While we continue to point with pride to native sons like jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, virtuoso country instrumentalist Steve Wariner, and R&B producer/artist Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds as Indy’s music legacy, no one is holding their breath for Indianapolis to become the next Motown, Seattle, or Austin, TX.

The point of the Indy MP3 Project is to put an end to the notion that Indianapolis is not a music town. Through a joint effort between the Cultural Development Commission, IndianapolisMusic.net, 92.3 WTTS-FM, and Indy’s Music Channel we have recruited 170 artists who represent some of the best singers, songwriters, performers, and musicians that Indianapolis has to offer and collected a work from each of them onto this single CD. On this disc you’ll hear rock, blues, pop, jazz, symphonies, folk, country, and a few styles of music that aren’t so easy to define. Together the songs weave into a diverse quilt that is the "Indianapolis Sound," a style of music as diverse and colorful as the city that produced it.

As you listen to this disc and select your favorite tracks, keep in mind that this collection only represents one-quarter of the artists who submitted materials for consideration for this collection. Indianapolis and the surrounding communities are full of talented and driven musicians who are writing songs, playing shows, and making records that are on par with anything you can find on the radio. We highly recommend that you use this CD only as a jumping off point as you make your own personal exploration of this city’s vibrant music community. Please feel free to share tracks, or even copies of the entire disc, with your friends and help us prove to our city, and then to the rest of the world, that Indianapolis can rock, groove, and sway as well as any town on Earth.

2004 Indy Mp3 Project Artists ...

INDY MP3 PROJECT
[ Featured Artists ]

After many weeks of judges sifting through every track submitted for the MP3 project and lots of hard decisions, we've finally settled on the 170 artists who will be represented on this collection. This process has been tough. We've debated on IMN in the past about if it's impossible to truly judge a piece of music fairly. It's been made even tougher by the fact that there were so many quality tracks submitted for this collection. In fact, we'll go as far as to say that in the three years since IMN went live, this project has been the hardest we've undertaken.

Despite the difficulties of the project, the MP3 collection has been the most rewarding thing we've done, maybe ever. It's rewarding to know that this whole thing was an unprecedented partnership between government, media, and arts. It's rewarding to think that somehow that partnership has captured what we think is an important moment in the musical history of Indy and added to that history by issuing this collection. It's rewarding to listen to the final product and be floored by the quality of music being produced in our town, a lot of which we'd never heard before this project. Finally, it's rewarding to know that so much music is being made in Indy and that this site is part of that energy.

Unfortunately, releasing the list means a lot of really great songs got left off, including songs by some bands that are among our favorites. We actually got a little depressed during the registration process. As submissions piled up, it became clear that for every artist that made the list, one would be left off. Then it got to where two would be left off, then three, four and so on. We could probably collect 150 artists who didn't make the cut and issue a second disc that would be equal in quality to this one.

More information about Selection Process

Now that it's done, we have to thank everyone who submitted tracks, listened to tracks, helped with packaging, or had any hand in this thing. This disc is going to be monumental. Don't miss your chance to get a copy. This is going to be one worth keeping until you're old and gray and bugging your grandkids about how much things rocked in 2004.
